PSA's Jakl has been teasing us for a few years now. It popped up in firing form at the last Gathering, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the wee little gun. However, we went an entire year without hearing anything, and now the Gathering 2022 has come along, and we got our hands on the Jakl once more. If you're not familiar, the Jakl is PSA's built from the ground-up rifle caliber platform.
The Savage Impulse is an interesting platform. Savage is known for its awesome, well-made bolt-action rifles. The Impulse fits the bolt action bag, but it’s far from traditional. The Savage Impulse utilizes a straight-pull bolt action. Most standard bolt action rifles require four movements. Up, back, forward, down. A straight-pull bolt action only requires two motions, rearward and forward.
Hot dog, do I love Heritage Manufacturing. The Rough Rider series of revolvers trained generations of shooters with affordable nature and 22LR chambering. Recently Heritage Manufacturing took the Rough Rider and began spitting out new models left and right. We got the Rancher Carbine, The Barkeep, and now, the littlest of all, the Barkeep Boot.
One of the biggest reveals of late 2021 and early 2022 was the Springfield Hellion. Springfield's own marketing was clever and cheeky, with a post showing a stack of VHS tapes proclaiming the date of the Hellion's reveal. A stack of VHS tapes pretty much gave it away. In Croatia, HS Produkt produces the VHS series for the Croatian military. The VHS series are modern bullpup, 5.56 service rifles. They are robust, well-proven, and very modern. Springfield imports the Xd series from HS Produkt, so the working relationship is there.

Palmetto States Armory hosted the first and hopefully annual Gathering event. This event brought together shooters, manufacturers, media, and more for three days of guns and fun. Sadly a tornado warning killed Thursday's adventures, but that didn't stop me from thoroughly combing the place Wednesday and Friday. One of the more exciting firearms brought to the table was the Jackl. The Jackl is a PSA creation and is one of their newest proprietary firearms. It's been a crowd favorite, albeit PSA has been scant with details and updates.
The Gathering is on! On the open range are dozens of pistols, pistols, rifles, machine guns, and even a flame thrower! Personally, the flamethrower was most attractive to me, but it seems like AKs have become a quick favorite. AKs were everywhere in various sizes, shapes, and calibers. I got my hands on each and everyone I could, and here are my five favorite AKs of the Gathering.

Ah, here I sit, warm and dry, in my hotel room contemplating my first day at the Gathering. The Gathering is a firearms media event hosted by Palmetto State Armory in Laurens, South Carolina. This is the very first Gathering but is unlikely to be the last. The Gathering has drawn in media, dealers, distributors, vendors, and of course, the core of the firearms industry, the consumer.
After a rough year like 2020 there has to be something positive eventually, and there's nothing more positive than a new gun. After Shot Show there are a many new rifles coming to the market from all over. Let's look at some of the top rifles and new models coming to us in 2021.
