The PSA Jakl Review - PSA Fighting Rifle
PSA's Jakl has been teasing us for a few years now. It popped up in firing form at the last Gathering, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the wee little gun. However, we went an entire year without hearing anything, and now the Gathering 2022 has come along, and we got our hands on the Jakl once more. If you're not familiar, the Jakl is PSA's built from the ground-up rifle caliber platform.

The Jakl utilizes a long-stroke gas system, not too much, unlike an AK series rifle. PSA ditched the buffer and buffer tube we are used to seeing on a AR 15 for an internal buffer system. This allows for folding and collapsing stocks. PSA utilizes a 1913 rail at the back of the gun for compatibility with the SIG series of braces and stocks.

The Jakl's designed to utilize a very short barrel. Why not? That's one of the big benefits of utilizing a short-stroke gas piston system. You can go short, and you won't hamper reliability. The barrel length sits at 7.5 inches, and the Jakl saw an initial design of 300 Blackout. However, 5.56 and various barrel lengths are entirely possible.
I spoke with one of the designers of the Jakl. He advised that the gun had a complete redesign this year, and they made some serious changes to ensure it would function reliably. Two production models have recently surpassed the 15,000 test mark, which is the standard for PSA firearms.

The lower is just your standard AR lower. This allows you to use the trigger, grip, safety, magazine release, and more of your choice. You can deck the lower out to be exactly what you want it to be. I got fairly lucky. I arrived at the PSA booth right as one of their engineers rolled up with the Jakl in hand.
I asked if I could shoot it, and he shrugged and said sure. The gun wore a PSA triangle brace but no sights or optics. I didn't mind, and I wanted to see what the Jakl could do. He handed me the Jakl, a mag, and told me to aim low. I did just that and let loose.

Without optics, I just aimed low at the berm and fired a few rounds. I can't comment on accuracy, but I can talk about its recoil, controls, and similar features. The recoil impulse was fairly light without the tell-tale feeling of a long-stroke gas piston moving back and forth.
The charging handle is massive and palace forward of the shooter. The AR-like controls function extremely well, and shooters who have handled an AR will easily handle the Jakl. Across the top sits a massive optics and accessory rail for adding all the little goodies you could ever want.

The Jakl comes in as a lightweight. It's extremely light and very maneuverable. I'd love to see one suppressed and think the 7.5-inch barrel gives you a fairly short barrel that mixes well with a suppressor.
When will it be released? Well, to put it gently, when it's ready. There isn't a release date up just yet, but I will anxiously await the news myself.

The PSA website says the 5.56 version had a 10.5" barrel.
"The barrel length sits at 7.5 inches, and the Jakl saw an initial design of 300 Blackout. "
Eh, are you sure that the Jakl you shot had a 7.5" barrel? Going off the picatinny rail spec there's .394 inches from the center of one pic rail trough to the center of the next pic rail trough. That puts the rail itself at over 7.5" - not counting chamber barrel sticking out past the rail, it looks like a 9" barrel all told? The one you were shooting was 300BO? Good to see the project isn't dead, haven't heard about it in a year...
Think I may have to get one of them babies! Hopefully they'll bring it out in 7.62×39 along with 5.56.

if that's a 7.5" barrel, it must connect to the upper 3 inches farther forward than on a normal AR upper receiver. what good is a 7.5" barrel if it's longer than a 10.5 in. barrel ar pistol?
I don't see anything new or interesting on this. My 6 year old 7.5" 300 Blackout AR pistol has better parts than this. plus it has a real side charging upper on it. and is suppressor ready (coming soon ) and probably around the same price as this PSA jackhole. why buy one of these when you can build a better one yourself?
the jackl might be a couple of inches shorter than my current build, but mine will have a 9 in. suppressor on a 5 inch 300 BLK barrel. maybe 7 years from now PSA will come out with one like it and you can talk about how new it is too. yawn...i'm going back to the future now, only thing I learned here was how far behind the times PSA is.... like most others.... nothing new to see here folks, move on.
