The Savage Impulse Review - A New Sensation

Updated 24 months ago

The Savage Impulse is an interesting platform. Savage is known for its awesome, well-made bolt-action rifles. The Impulse fits the bolt action bag, but it’s far from traditional. The Savage Impulse utilizes a straight-pull bolt action. Most standard bolt action rifles require four movements. Up, back, forward, down. A straight-pull bolt action only requires two motions, rearward and forward.

Straight pull bolt actions are plenty popular across the seas. In Europe, semi-auto weapons tend to be more restricted than simple bolt action rifles. A straight-pull bolt action rifle offers a much faster and smoother action than a traditional bolt action rifle. The straight pull bolt action design offers a faster rate of fire than most, and that’s made them popular for hunting.

The Savage Impulse Riffle

Straight pull bolt action rifles haven’t been super popular in the United States, but the Savage Impulse is changing that. The Savage Impulse utilizes a simple but rapid action that makes it super quick to dial in a quick follow-up shot in a rather sporting way. I’ve never handled a straight-pull bolt action until the Savage Impulse, and I left impressed.

The Savage Impulse 6.5 Creedmoor

At the Gathering 2022, I got some time behind the Predator variant of the Savage Impulse in 6.5 Creedmoor. The range was limited to 300 yards, but it still felt nice to zoom in, suit up, and deliver accurate fire on target. The trigger utilizes the Savage Accutrigger, which is super nice and utilizes a built-in trigger safety device. There is no perceptible takeup, just a slight wall that’s light and short. It breaks cleanly and is absolutely amazing. The Accutrigger is one of the best stock rifle triggers on the market.

The Impulse at 300 Yards

I’m no expert shot, but I had zero problems hitting a target at 300 yards with a rifle I’d never fired on an optic I hadn’t zeroed. Dings on steel always make me crack a smile. The Savage Impulse recoiled lightly without the shoulder-kicking nature of most bolt guns. The Impulse is a hefty rifle, and when fully loaded with an optic, it tips the scales at around 10 pounds. It’s hefty but manageable, and the weight helps stabilize the platform.

The Savage Impulse 6.5 Creedmoor Shooting

The Savage Impulse utilizes the Savage Accubedding system to help ensure accuracy, and the model at the Gathering wore a simple bipod that made stabilizing the rifle a breeze. The controls are extremely ergonomic with a tang safety and rear-mounted bolt release. The bolt glides rearward and positively ejects the spent cartridge with ease. The magazine release is super easy to press, and the magazines drop easily enough.

The Savage Impulse Shooting at the Range

The Savage Impulse isn’t just a gimmick with its straight pull design, but it’s a rock-solid rifle altogether. The Impulse is ergonomic, accurate, easy to handle, and a ton of fun to shoot. It might be a little heavy, but it takes the sting out of the weapon’s recoil. The Savage Impulse ships in various configurations and in a ton of different calibers. They are shipping now under various MSRPs depending on model and caliber. The latest chassis model certainly looks like a sweet addition to their lineup.
