Description
The Gerber Gator Machete is a long-bladed knife with a dual function design. It features a 15\" fine edge blade on one side and an 18\" great saw blade on the other. This Gerber machete can be used to effectively chop and saw wooden branches, especially while hacking a path through a dense bush growth. Easy to swing and control during heavy use, this blade features a finely balanced unique design that comes with a black oxide coating and a quarter tang. The high carbon steel machete comes with a gator tactile rubber grip, which delivers effective ergonomic control during use. A 400D nylon riveted sheath helps keep the knife safe when it is not in use. It also comes in handy during transport. In addition, a lanyard is conveniently attached at the end of the blade.

I completely agree. Almost all the stuff Gerber passes off these days is garbage unless it's USA made. Several years ago it was a different story. I have several suspension multi tools along with several knives made over seas from 4-5 years ago but they quality has went way down hill. If you want to buy foreign, get cold steel. Have the spartan and absolutely love it.
I almost ordered a few of these for myself and a friend. Went to Amazon and read the reviews. Many said the same thing, soft steel in the blade. Chips and dings in the blade from clearing brush sounds common. Order a Ontario Military model for about $24 on line and you will not be disappointed. I bet the Corona model we sell at Lowes for $14 would be a better investment than this Gerber. I miss the days when someone said "Gerber" and I thought about Mark I, Mark II and Guardian knives, not all the cheap Chinese stuff they sell now. That being said I do have a number of Kershaw knives made in China and they are great working tools. Kershaw must exercise more intense quality control.
Price vs. steel quality. Unknown "high-carbon stainless steel" could be almost anything, but for $13.27 I don't know what folks expect. I've got a nice Gerber Gator 650 folder made in the USA out of 420HC steel that's over twenty years old and going strong. I paid around 3x as much for it as this machete.
The Cold Steel Spartan is around $70, the Gerber Mark II is $80+, the Mark I is going for over $100 on eBay. It's a bit unfair to compare those blades with this inexpensive machete aimed at the budget buyer.
