I have one and it is a great gun. I love it.

So pissed they changed the barrel on this. Was all set to get a sport as my backup zombie rifle. The 1:8 5R is awesome on my M&P15 MOE Mid. Seemed to good to be true on a sport.

how much would it be to buy the upgraded barrel and replace it?

As a Sport owner I can tell you this is a great AR. It chews up any ammo you give it, is accurate, and has a superb company behind it.

Don't let the lack of a FA or dust cover impact your decision to buy one. I have AR's with those items and they're rarely ever used and if you're in a situation that benefits from you having them you'll have far bigger worries then a lack of a dust cover to worry about.

These rifles do not have the 1/8 twist with 5r rifling. I called Kentucky Gun Co. before ordering. This info is not up to date.

Awesome value for the money. The sport will take any ammo you throw at it and have yet to meet anyone who doesn't have a positive thing to say AFTER FIRING IT PERSONALLY. So sick of hearing everyone wine about the lack of forward assist and dust cover. That melonite 1:8 5R barrel is pretty badass and it hard to argue with hundreds of positive reviews from respected evaluators. This rifle represents the best entry/value AR on the market...period.

I thought they changed the barrel to a 1 in 9- did they change it back to the 1 in 8 5R?

I am looking for a entry level AR. Anyone got an opinion on this AR?

A co-worker bought one from Walmart ($695.00). Extra nice for the money. Used cheap Herter's ammo .223 Remington 55 gr HP steel case with cheap 30 round mag (Paid $8.00 for it from Sportsman's Guide) to test fire of 20 rounds. No problems! Looks like it loves cheap ammo--time will tell?

I have an original first gen S&W 15T AR and a 5.45 S&W AR. Both are good quality, with really good fit & finish.
This is a good deal. If your concerned with it not having a dust cover or forward assist you could always buy a stripped upper seperately and sell the stock slickside one for $40 or $50 and still have a great, high quality AR for less than $700.

You don't need a Forward Assist on an entry level AR or ANY AR for that matter. Dust cover is pretty pointless too. This is an excellent value.

Just make sure it has a forward asist and a dust cover they are all pretty good though. Del Ton makes a great one.

This one has neither forward assist nor a dust cover. If you're planning on a SHTF rifle, you might want those features. If you're just planning on using it from home defense and target practice, you probably won't.

Forward assist only helps in 1 out of 3 issues... fail to go all the way into battery/ into the chamber... doesn't help with failure to extract/eject (all the way), nor for failure to feed a new round up from the magazine... Back in the day, it was all about different/ bad powders and poor/ not done cleaning methods in the field... So, now adays, keep your weapon clean and properly lubed, and use good magazines ( with good feed lips). So, yeah, you don't need a forward assist any longer, just tap the mag, rack back on the charging handle to extract the round, observe the chamber for blockage/ bad round, then let the bolt go forward at full speed, to feed the next round in... then re-engage your target. Hope this helps... Regards

I've fired untold thousands of rounds from my AR-15s over the years and have never once used the forward assist. Your mileage may vary.
