What are typical dimensions of plates for say a a 6’3, 210lbs dude? I had bought some a few years back not really knowing what I was doing and ended up with tiny things that are even kinda small on my wife, though I guess might be suitable for a child?
I’d like to get some proper fittings ones, just want to avoid making the same mistake twice.
10x12 plates are recommended for people in the 5'4" to 6'3" range. Really depends on what your needs are as far as what material or protective rating you think you might need. Do you work on or around the water, otherwise I don't know why you would need to worry about sinking. Steel armor shatters and redirects the projectile, polyethylene and ceramic plates absorb the bullet and can have backface deformation
10x12 is your "normal" aka "large" size, is still pretty small on an average size guy. Worn correctly should start at your sternum, would cover your heart and lungs. For example I'm 5'9", slender / athletic and much of my abdomen is still uncovered wearing "large" plates. They make a larger plates but they aren't much bigger, 11x14 I think. Bigger plates = much heavier, especially with AR500
*these are nominal sizes, actual sizes are slightly different and should, in theory, be based on DOD SAPI (ESAPI / XSAPI) sizing.
I'd recommend not buying steel plates though. Lots of reasons; mainly spall, they are heavy as sin, you'll sink like a rock if you ever did go in the water for SHTF use (for range or HD use...might not matter to you). There are quality and comparable ceramic plate sets for about $50-75 more, you'll likely end up upgrading down the line anyway. Only benefits to steel is it in pretty much unbreakable, thinner (yet still harder to wear), and has no shelf life. Some people will argue AR500 will take countless rounds of (whatever) but how likely are you to get shot dozens of times in the exact same tiny box on your chest yet magically not get hit anywhere else?
