Which is more effective for self defense, if both guns are using the best defensive ammo possible, a 7.5" AR in 5.56 or a 7.5" AR in 9mm? Really would like to know. Thanks.

5.56 with a surefire 60 round mag isn't a bad choice. Can't see 9mm.

Wifey uses a 10" 300 BO, also a 44 magnum will stop someone, with the right ammo you can get a 390 power factor with the 44 which is even more than the 300BO. Grabagun has a Taurus 44 Tracker on sale right now for around $357. Even a high cap 10mm won't be as powerful as 300BO and no where near that of the 44 magnum.

If you want a serious STOP gun get a 3 1/2" 12 Gauge and put in some hunting slugs in it, over 1100 power factor.

If you get the right muzzle device on the 5.56 you can push the blast forward into your target instead of directing it out to the sides.

Ok, cool story, bro. Doesn't answer my question at all, but thanks for sharing...

5.56 produces a little more kinetic energy than 9mm. But there's more to 'effectiveness' than mass times velocity squared. Will the 5.56 bullet reliably expand in soft tissue at 7.5" barrel velocities? A 9mm bullet designed for 3.5" barrels will have no problems in a 7.5" barrel. There's also a huge muzzle flash and blast from a 5.56 that won't be nearly as severe from a 9mm.
