The civilian BAR, which was initially created by Bruce Browning, a member of the Browning family, served as the prototype for all subsequent autoloading hunting rifles. With a contemporary style, fine oil finish walnut, a precise aluminum receiver, and a hammer-forged barrel, the most recent MK 3 variant improves on the earlier iterations. Although the fundamental design of the Mark 3 is similar to the earlier ShortTrac and LongTrac BARs, there have been several important changes. To offer a smoother transition of the stock to a traditional design, the undercut just behind the pistol grip has been removed. The new rifle no longer has interchangeable recoil pads, and the skip-line checkering pattern has been replaced with a more conventional one for a cleaner appearance. The muzzle of the forearm has been also modified. The rifle has inherently superior metalwork. The barrel has a rich, deep bluing. The trigger guard and floorplate are made of black composite, while the receiver is made of an aircraft-grade alloy. The receiver's satin-nickel finish, which has delicate flower pattern etchings around the Browning logo on each side, adds contrast. The MK 3 is available in the most widely used hunting calibers, ranging from the 243 Winchester, which is favored by deer hunters, to the powerful 300 Winchester Magnum.
