Mcgowen offers 5.45x39 barrels in length of your choice. the 7n6 is banned from import both specifically and by sanction. Surplus is probably expended in Ukraine now anyway. Most all production is going to military stockpiles now. Go figure. I cant imagine why. In a world full of nukes and biological and god knows what it just might be a good idea to play well with others. Ok Im old and silly.
No one is going to manufacture large production barrel blanks of the oddball 21 caliber when the cheap ammo is gone except for personal stashes. Ditto for 5.45 bolts. No large production runs no dirt cheap components. The ARD 16" barrels at $125 and 5.45 bolts at $65 are a good deal Thats twisting a 5.45 upper together for $300, only a little bit more than the el cheapo BCAs. No idea if the ARD or Mcgowen barrels are proper 21 caliber- twist is correct.
Dont expect the gains you see from 556 in a 20". 5.45 is optimized for 16". three grains less powder and its a lot faster burn rate than 556 powders. Its a 5.7 +p+ Look at the 12.5" data thats out there for 5.45. It only about 100fps shy of 16" velocity. Its not gaining much for longer tubes at those lengths. like i said fast powder say 110 296 ish. 556 was optimized in capacity for the 20" m16 and it shines there and is a bit blasty at 14.5 or 16" wheras the 5.45 shines at 16". Hard to beat beat the 556 for performance at 20" unless its the 22 creedmore in a large frame, heh heh.5.45 is the original 6.5g 6.8 224 valk long bullet outside case. A LOT of air inside the 7n6 its long Except not enough capacity to drive the heavy pills. The 224 valk is just a fat 5.45 with appropriate powder capacity. The powders are very fast for a rifle more of a "rifleish" cartridge in the 5.45. AS designed- 5.7 x 28 +p+. Designed to feed a bullet long for its terminal performance not its coefficient. Great for jungle or Europe. . For the soviets in Afghanistan not so much. Still a absolutely groundbreaking cartridge the product of a very good engineering effort but introduced just as the soviets entered a conflict where it lacked range. Too bad so sad..Vietnam on their minds. 5.45 and 74s would have ruled in nam. Specific designs outperform but lack versatility. My guess 3000 ish out of a 20" with 5.45 7n6 not much more.. I get it you want that poison pullet faster. But dont let me discourage you! Have mcgowen spin a 20" 5.45 for you and report back. I cant do all the work around here. :)

There are still people who would like to buy 5.45x39 uppers. All these calibers and no 5.45x39. Only one place sells them for $450 and that is MA. The other places sell them no less than $570. Not only should they carry them but they should offer a 20" version too.
