Level 3 is not level 4, and this one's weight is on par with high dollar military ESAPI (also level 4). Thinking the steel you mentioned still weighs more though. That said, I'm not a huge proponent of level 4 civilian side. Just not as many people getting shot with 7.62x54r AP rounds here than the middle east, which is why level 4 is popular when the mil switched to ESAPI from the level 3 SAPI. For doomsday, I say save a bit of weight per plate and go level 3 (ceramic/composite).
Sorry, should have been more clear: I would prefer III steel plates that regardless of certification or not as I know they can stop 95 percent of bullets they would likely be faced with vs an ALLEGED level IV “ceramic” plate which no one bothered to officially test (red flag?!?) which is (best case) capable of stopping only a single round for double the price and minimal weight savings. The other red flag to me is if this were true ‘ballistic’ ceramic why does this weigh almost DOUBLE what a comparable ESAPI does? Same material, same threat rating but completely different weight? My mom never bought me Math-Magic but something does not add up…
Your mom failed you then. ESAPI is something around 7-8 pounds each for size medium.
ETA: Or rather 6lb. Guess it's been a while since I looked into it. So 8lb SAPI set or 11lb ESAPI set.
Or these plates vs mil ESAPI, 15lb vs 11lb.
Per the Q&A section on Sportsman's Guide this are 'rated' for a single hit (not multiple hits) and aren't actually "certified" in any ballistic testing. I think I will stick with level 3 steel for half the price and about the same weight of these "ceramic" plates that weigh 7.5 pounds.
