This Was Supposed to be the Toughest Pistol Optic? - Swampfox Kraken

Updated 44 months ago

The Kraken is a legendary sea monster of mythological size and power, in The Clash of the Titans, original film from the 80s, it was basically indestructible and unstoppable, thus kind of the whole plot of the movie. Swampfox was looking to make a red dot for service guns, like the Glock, that was tough as nails and indestructible. They went with the same name Kraken, I've been told in no uncertain terms that they're cracking, is just that indestructible yet affordable, wrong thing to tell me. Let's put Kraken into the test, check this out.

I'm Drew case from Beyond seclusion, bringing you the reviews directly hereto gun.deals where I only give you my honest opinion, and it is what it is.

The Kraken was made for a very specific purpose, service duty guns, and Glock is probably the most renowned service gun at least in the U.S. Its size and everything was determined based on the most common carry side arms and their holsters thus this particular size and shape. With that said, it has some limited options for mounting at the moment, but they are making more options for mounting as we speak. Let's just take a look at the specs and tech and I'll show you what I'm talking about.

A lot of you are going to make a mistake that I made, you're gonna think that this is for putting on a Picatinny, your 1911 rail and you will quickly discover it does not fit. This was designed to capture law enforcement, military. This thing is tough as nails as I want to show you, and I expect that it will pass. Anyway, to fit on a Picatinny, your 1911 rail, it needs to be just a little bit wider, and then that is not going to fit along with what they're hoping to market this for because service weapons fit often in a specific holster, there’s a couple holsters out there that are real common, commonly used and for optics which are becoming popular, It needs to be specific specs.

That’s why they have these different plates and they are going to make all kinds of different plates, they have a high riser, which is what I would like to see because I think this is just screaming to go on shotguns and tactical and anything else, especially if this is as tough as they say it is, but until then I'm gonna mount it as it was sort of designed and intended on probably the most common and traditional service weapon, my Glock 17.

The Kraken's got the shake awake, so we've got it sitting down here, there's our green dot, we will just time it here and make sure that goes out and comes back on, with just a touch. It is shut off, let's see what it takes to get it back on, just a tap, there you go guys, shake awake, auto live, Motac- whatever you want to call it, I absolutely love this feature.

I started off this review withit on a dagger that I was working on. Ran into some complications …This is my Glock, I have switched the Kraken over to this. I'm doing a lot of reviews actually with different pistol optics, red dots and stuff, and I will say, in my experience, that almost every pistol comes with kind of one particular optic in mind that best suits it and I've also discovered that pretty much most pistol red dot optics come with a particular pistol that they have in mind. The Kraken absolutely is a perfect fit on the Glock that should have been where I started.

Anyway, I had some issues with some screws stripping and they were the screws, I can't remember if they came with a dagger or if they came with the Kraken, but anyway, this is not a new phenomenon, I'm experiencing this with another pistol and another optic from a totally different company, and, unfortunately it happens a lot, It's really frustrating. Anyway, the Kraken absolutely, the Glock, no question whatsoever, I've got it on here, I just re-zeroed, boom, it went like clockwork, check this group out and we're gonna essentially start over here.

I tossed the Kraken on the Glock, we had a group, we dialed down last group right there, guys, that's awesome, I wish I would have just started this way, but I had a dagger to review, and I wanted to try that. Anyway, now let's go to a hundred yards and see what we can do at some distance, and then, go back to the CQB range, have some fun, take the Kraken off, torture test the crack out of it, and then put it back on and go from there.
I want to show you the field of view and that crisp, clean dot, and there I think I got it. It is a wonderfully crisp, clean, clear dot.
Let's give it a go, here I got the 115 grain that's what I zeroed the Kraken width here on my Glock.

I wasn’t having luck at 200 yards or earlier, I think because my optic was killing loose. Let's give it a go now and see if we can hit that steel.

There we go, that puts a smile back on my face!

Guys, that says a lot about actually the trigger that I've got in my Glock, I don't know why I just didn't go with this in the first place. It says a lot about AAC, again, special thanks to AAC, and it says a lot for the Kraken. Let's go back to the CQB range real quick, do some transitioning, and then I want to get this off and I want to torture test the crack out of the Kraken. Let's just see what we can do here with the Kraken in the CQB range.
So far, as transition well reached!

I don't know, if it must be just with the mechanics, it's kicking the brass back up, and it's coming down on my head, my Glock wasn't doing that before, can't say I'm particularly fan of the brass raining down on my head, shooting something else, and put an optic on it, and the exact same thing was happening.

I would say, it passes rapid transition test!

What I want to do now is, I want to take this off, and I want to go torture test.
I'm up here on my deck, back at the cabin, I'm about 27 feet. What I'm going to do with this Swampfox is I'm going to toss it up and we're going to get even more. I'm going to try to get 30-40 feet, and I got my son down there to help keep an eye on it, so let's give it a go, here, oops... Well, I'm kind of locked out there, looks like it hit some of the gravel, fortunately, didn't hit the glass.

Next phase, give her a go. Let's see what we got here, it's been a good 30 minutes. I get my arm wet. Okay, guys, it did not pass that submersion test after the torture test. Anyway, we do have water in there, we'll get a hold of Swampfox and see where we go from here.

All right, here we go!

All right, let's go take a look. Here we go, we I mean it took a dive there. I know, we tossed it from the tower, but this is just kind of part of my test that I've always done on the deck, and just being consistent.

Let's see right there we go, all right, I mean we've definitely given it some g-forces there, we tossed it, dropped it, here on the deck.

I was told that we could freeze this solid, so we are literally gonna freeze it solid!

We said that we were gonna freeze it solid, and we froze it solid, see if we can still see if it's on, that would be kind of cool, wouldn't it.

Let's just take a look here, hopefully, we'll see what we got.

This is my third Kraken, the first two, as we know, they failed the torture test. What I did do was I've been reaching out to the company, and I haven't had really good luck with communication to be honest, guys. I did ask and emailed that this come basically set up ready for me to torture test, there seemed to be some discrepancy or, I guess, questions inference that maybe I hadn't tightened the battery compartment down enough, and I addressed that, I indeed had and did not get any response, so what I want to do here is make sure that there's no issue here, so we've got the battery that came with it, pop that in, as we can see, everything's dry, we're solid. We've got that in, our gasket here is intact, as it came, I really did kind of want it to come, but we're going to tighten this down together. I can't get that any tighter, and I have run into problems with companies, don't over tighten, but that is tight, and we should be good to go here, I have not done anything to this, this is straight up out of the box, we did the battery compartment.

What I want to do is I want to torture test this the way I typically torture test optics. I know, the idea was that this thing was going to be tank proof, but we have two failures to show the opposite of that, so let's just do what I typically do, and we'll go from there.
This is the typical height, we're about 15 feet here, I'm not throwing it off the tower, we're not going to run it over the ATV.This is this is my typical torture test, so we're just gonna back up here and see if we pass the our run-of-the-mill, not the extraordinary.

It is IPX7, and this is not three feet, it's not a meter, in fact, we're about 18 inches, but I use this a lot. I double checked the battery compartment, doing the drop, did not draw that loose, I'm not seeing anything pop it in there. We're gonna give it 30 minutes.
We have been in there half hour. The initial exam here would appear that it's passed, so let me get this dried off and inspect it a little further. It did pass the submersion, I can't see any water, any breaches, a lot of times this will show if there is, we'll get condensation, so let's give it a go.

Take a look here, still on. What we need to do is we just need to let it thaw out and see if we have any condensation or anything on the inside, which will show that we have a breach, any of the gases, inert gases in there would be purged with a breach, and we'll be able to see it.

We did the standard torture test, we dropped it, we dropped it in the water, submerged it, froze it, battery compartment is still on there, tight. It does not appear that we have had any breach. That was my typical torture test, which actually exceeds quite a few optics ratings. The big thing was is I was asked to do an extreme torture test and so I did, that's not something I would normally do, and I wouldn't necessarily use that as the sole determining factor on what you think. It passed just fine the regular torture test, and we're just going to double check here, go ahead and open up the battery compartment, it does have water in there, that's the third one. I think I'm gonna call that a wrap, I'm not really sure what else to do, I don't know if there's some quality control, there's none on the inside of the optic, but I'm glad I had the video of putting this down, so guys, it is what it is, you decide what you think.
