POF Phoenix 9mm Sub Gun

Updated 24 months ago

Hey, guys, welcome back! The market is literally flooded with 9mm PC, pistol carbines, or PCCs, pistol caliber carbines. Most of you are familiar with some of the rifle ones like Ruger's PC Charger, and then all the AR versions. The question is: Is there anything new under the Sun? POF is kind of known for making some unique stuff, I reviewed a 9mm lever action not too long ago, the Tombstone, and that was a lot of fun that led me to the Phoenix.

The Phoenix is obviously sort of has the AR look, but it is obviously bufferless, so I really was interested in trying this out. Let's just take a look at the Phoenix, see what it's all about, see what we can do with it, and, yeah, I'm standing on my deck as always with the 500-yard range behind us, I don't think we're going to get up to 500 yards on this, but, hey, let's see how far we can go up that hill, check it out!

I'm Drew Case from Beyond Seclusion bringing the reviews directly here to you on gun.deals. Anyway, let's get going with the review. What I want to do is I want to just dive right into the Phoenix here, see what it's all about, let's check out the specs and tech, and it is feature-packed, so let's take a look.

Super fast out-of-the-box, we've got a really nice single point sling, comes with a 35-round mag, instruction manual, lock, and then the gun itself.

Let's take a close up look at this. As expeditiously as possible I want to run through the features starting front to back, so we have a muzzle brake, I will say it does make it very loud, we have a hand stop here, which is really nice, we have a non-reciprocating charging handle that is ambidextrous, we can switch it to the other side, I really like that, we've got plenty of M-LOK real estate here, a Picatinny rail that runs the full length on the flip side. Then we also have ambidextrous bolt release and mag release, and then on the other side it's kind of flipped. I will say they're flipped, so on the top is the bolt release over here on the top is the mag release, and it could just be my brain but I get confused. We have nice little scalps here, great place to put your finger, ambidextrous on the other side. I do love the space in here for the trigger, lightning cuts, I'm not sure what the purpose of those is, but they're cool. We have a flared magwell, which is always really nice like that, we have ambidextrous fire control safety on both sides. Also, I forgot to point out we have quick detach on the ends, and then we also have one here on the butt, and then Picatinny rail back here so that we can attach a brace or a stock. The grip is nice, it's comfortable.

Let's just check the trigger on it. One thing I notice is this could be a bit of a problem, this is coming down and is hitting my finger, I may actually change that out, but anyway, let's check the trigger here… little bit of creep and mush reset, not bad, it's actually pretty good. Let's test the pounds: we got there 6 and ½, little over 6 and 1/2. And then back here we've got what would appear to be a little buffer, and then breakdown is super easy, we just pull the bolt out and we are broke down and we're good to go on cleaning. I like that simple design, that's KISS, drop it back down, get the retaining pin in, and we're good to go.

Following YouTube's policy I have my 20-round mag here for the review. Honestly, I would probably go with a 10 round because even this is almost too long for benching, but anyway, another thing is it comes with the loader, and I discovered on the Tombstone, and this is a proprietary mag, a lot of people are going to say “Yeah, I wish they had a Glock!”, and that's not necessarily a bad idea, but this mag loader you're going to want to use for whatever reason, at least with the Tombstone. When I put them in by hand it caused some feeding issues, so besides that I don't know why you'd want to do it by hand, but make sure and use the mag loader.

I just happened to be doing a review for Olight on their very first optic ever, Olight's Osight. It's a red dot, mine in particular was a green dot, it was perfect to came just in time, so I had that mounted on here to start off this review with. Take a look at what I was able to do with Olight’s Osight.

There we got it!

Nice!

What time is it now?!

Nice, that was a lot of fun, I enjoyed that. What I want to do though is I want to have something with a little more precision. This is Primary Arms 2x, the Gemini. I love this thing, you're going to want to check the review out on that, but I have a feeling that we're going to be able to get better groups with this, and more likely to go up the hill, so let's get this zeroed and see what we can do with it.

It's kind of windy out so we're going to start off with AAC and we're going to just go across the bottom there and see what we get for groups with these, and then I may change targets, we'll see how much room we got, and then I'm going to come back I'm going to try these, and then I'm going to try these, I think what I'm going to do is five-shot groups with each of these, and we will find out what it likes best and hopefully get an idea of what we can expect for accuracy. Let's shoot the first group with 115 grain, the full metal jacket.

pof-pheonix-sub-gun-shooting-115-grain-full-metal-jacket

Nice! I can tell that's a pretty nice group. What I'm going to do is I'm going to do that with all the rest five- shot groups.

I absolutely love Primary Arms prism optics, the 3x, they've got a bunch of them for the 9mm and every other caliber, they're awesome. Anyway we just shot the last of the AAC, the fourth group, let's go take a look.

pof-pheonix-sub-gun-groups

That was zeroing and dialing it in, so there's five shots there, that's the 115 grain full metal jacket, that's really not bad. That surprises me, that's 115 grain with the XTP bullet, that's crazy. 124 grain, we did have one flyer, I'm not sure why, that's a really nice consistent group, and then there's the 147. I think what I might do is I might throw up one more and we'll put 10 shots.

I put 10 more rounds of the 124 grain full metal jacket, that's really not bad, guys, I think thus far that's probably the preferred.
We got a variety of results, that's the 124 grain, the SAR, I think the 124 grain it seems to have a preference for that, I can't remember which ones, I think these were the 247, not really showing any love for them, that's 115 grain, I can't remember what that is but that's not a bad group, that one's getting a little bit spread out. There you go, I'm going to say 124 grain between the two.

I apologize for the wind, I want to see how this handles steel case so we got little Tula here and we’ll see how it groups. Let's just give this a go.
It never surprises me, the groups that I get with Tula!

pof-pheonix-sub-gun-shooting-tula

I love it! the Tula may end up being about one of the best groups, 10 rounds of Tula. It handled it just fine and that's a pretty solid group. People really snub their nose at Tula and Wolf, and all the power to you, I love the savings, I have shot thousands and thousands of rounds of both, and I personally have had really almost no issues. Anyway, there you go, it is what it is.

Something I just noticed real quick here, our non-reciprocating charging handle, which is ambidextrous, we can put that on both sides, I noticed this wearing on the metal and what is happening is with this laying flat, it's coming forward and apparently wearing on that.

If you follow my channel you know my philosophy on shooting pistols and PCCs, pistol caliber carbines, in my opinion, and this is my opinion, anybody can stand at 10 feet and bang on the steel, if you can't hit the steel at 10 feet you need a lot more practice, and at the CQB range for me it's mostly just how fast can I transition. What I like to do when I'm reviewing a gun I want to see how far I can go with it, I want to see what kind of accuracy, because if I can bang on steel at 100 or 200 or 300, up the hill, that's going to say, I think, a lot about the gun, the trigger, the optic. I'm not going to waste time going back to the CQB range.

Also you might notice this, and no, this thing isn't a huge recoiler, I had my shoulder reconstruction a long time ago and kind of starting to have some issues again here. Anyway, this limb saver I got from Natchez, this thing is awesome, I absolutely love it, so if any of you guys having kind of shoulder issues or whatever this thing it's the way to go, and because Natchez I believe does not sell any guns or anything.

Anyway, let's see here what we can do at 100 yards, and then start reaching out there and see what else we can do.

With these M-LOK slots, and just the way I was holding it my fingers were going in there, I didn't like that, that wasn't particularly comfortable. I would like to find maybe something to cover those slots up or I'll have to change my grip or something. Anyway, let's see what we can do at 200.

pof-pheonix-sub-gun-shooting-200-yards

Hey, that's pretty nice!

I haven't encountered this before, and I've had things with the M-LOK slots here, but for whatever reason the size of this, or maybe is just that I haven't had my full cup of coffee, and I don't really want to put my hands up here, even though it's not reciprocating, but… Okay, before the wind picks up, let's just see how far we can go, let's start here at 200.

pof-pheonix-sub-gun-shooting-200-yards-benching

That's almost too easy!

Alright, that was using the first dot down on this reticle, let's try 300!

pof-pheonix-sub-gun-shooting-300-yards

Hey, that was interesting!

It comes with a sling, we can put braces on, braces are good to go in the ATF so that is all good and legal, but I want to show what we can do or can't do with just a sling in case things change or somebody's not wanting to mess with that. I will say, with this optic, with a 2X prism, it's not quite as conducive for this distance, for me, I would probably go with a different optic if I'm going to go in this configuration, but let's just see here what we can do at 100 yards.

pof-pheonix-sub-gun-shooting-100-yards-with-sling

That wasn't too bad!

Again, with a nice big red dot with no magnification I'd be able to get on target a lot faster. Let's try 200.

It's definitely more challenging that way. The big thing for me is, with slings like this, where to put my hands, and like I said, for a 9 this has a little bit more recoil than I might expect.

Let's just try distance that is probably more in sync with where most of you are going to be shooting or how you would be shooting.

There you have it, guys, it is what it is, as I always say, I hope you enjoyed the review. Until next time on gun.deals, happy shooting, educate our young people to shooting and gun safety, and remember, every time that we're out and we're shooting, everybody's watching us, all eyes are on you.
