LMT Defense R21 RAHE Estonia Reference Rifle

Updated 50 months ago

Hey everybody, welcome back to gun.deals. Today on the table we have an amazing AR-15 to go over with you. This is an LMT defense, it is a RAHE I believe, it’s Estonian, I don’t know how to pronounce that right but it’s an Estonian reference AR-15. There’s a lot to go over. Let’s get this review started.

Alright folks, as I said this is an LMT and I probably botched the name of it, it’s an Estonian word basically means hell as in like a hell of a gunfire and so this was developed I believe probably like a year ago, for this, well it came available to the Estonians I think like a year ago maybe a little longer so they asked for some specific designs to their gun. This is pretty much an exact replica, obviously it’s not fully auto which is a shame but a lot of features they did request is obviously on this gun. So, yeah, let’s get started.

LMT Defense R21 RAHE

What does it comes with?

It comes with a 30-round PMAG, this is a Gen 3. The gun is empty for all you internet safety officers out there so you’re good to go. This is a BCM buttstock, it did not come with this it came with a magpul SLK. It’s an ok buttstock, it’s not my favorite by any means, it’s, you know, but that’s what it comes with but I just switched that out while I’ve been reviewing this just because it’s my preference. It does come with a Blue Force Gear sling, not the black it does come with the green one. Since I love Blue Force Gear slings, I have all my rifles, I did have a spare one so I put this on but it will come with a green Blue Force Gear, it comes with all the QD mounts and things like that which is really nice, and then it comes with your user manual and things like that.

Let’s start at the back, as I say we’ve gone over the buttstock already. You have a gray buffer tube right here. A lot of buffer tubes, I’ve noticed with all guns, are black but this one is this kind of gray color which is the same color as my Knight Armament so I’m just wondering if they get from the same place, I don’t know but anyway it’s kind of a gray color.

Come to your castle nut, it’s double-stacked, the stacking looks fantastic and you have a QD sling plate sling right at the back here.

Moving along you have an ambidextrous charging handle, it’s all metal and it’s extended, it’s got some nice texturing on there so you can get a really nice grip on there and it is made by LNT it’s not made by another company or anything like that, it’s an LMT charging handle.

On e of the things that I haven’t noticed on previous or any other charging handles it has these serrations, you can probably hear it, right, as these serrations on the back there. I’m assuming when you put your finger on there if you put your thumb on it is giving you that texture to get extra grip on it. So, well thought-out design on the iambi charging handle.

It does come with these backup sights, these flip up sights, they are all metal, they’re really quality sights, they are really nice. There’s two different apertures at the back here that you can select but very nice backup sights, I do like them a lot and again they are LMT branded, their own branded sights.

Does not come with an Aimpoint T2 but that’s what we have on here for this review. This is a monolithic upper, now what that means is all one piece. Now, a lot of AR-15s you’ll have the free flare rail will come to right here where it attaches to the upper but this is actually all one piece. The machining is absolutely fabulous, very, very nice and it has all your team markings and things like that. Obviously we have a ton of M-LOK slots and QD sling attachment mounts on your rail and there’s one here also. So, super, super nice upper.

Below this upper we have a short stroke piston system in here and it’s attached to your gas block up here, has two different settings and then if you want to… now this is a Gen 2 gas block and there’s a little button here you’ll depress and then you can simply turn and then you can take out your piston to clean it or do whatever else you need to do to it and then when you put it back in just press that button again then just rotate around like that so it locks in place, so very cool system.

The Estonians, they specifically asked for this design so like the New Zealand LMT is a gas system but they have the piston system in this, now again, it was a request from them.

The barrel is 14.5-inch barrel, it’s a chrome-molly steel. They don’t coat, LMT doesn’t have cold hammer-forged barrels but these barrels are absolutely excellent, no worries about that. And at the bottom of your gas block here you’re gonna notice this little piece, this is a bayonet lug, again this was another request by the Estonians that they had to have a bayonet lug for attaching a bayonet and ten you have the muzzle device up here, I’m not sure what suppressor is designed to be used with but it’s pinned and welded being a 14.5-inch barrel and you can obviously witch that out if you want to do that but it’s a pretty decent muzzle device, I will probably switch this out to a dead air one so we can suppress it later. So, yeah, so that is kind of the upper, it’s really excellent quality.

Another thing I forgot to mention, to switch these barrels if you want to go with a longer barrel, if you want to switch it may be a 300 blackout or something like that. All we need to do is switch out these two screws right here, take these out and then you can take the barrel out so it’s really easy system to switch out your barrels and things like that so again this system is monolithic upper, from what I read ii has been around for about 20 years so it’s really thought-out proven design. LMT is obviously a battle proven rifle as well obviously, if these are issued to the Estonians and the New Zealand military so, yeah, we have that excellent, excellent upper.

Moving down we have a MARS lower. These lowers are absolutely excellent. They’re completely ambidextrous so you can already see right here that we have your safety’s ambi and they’ve colored it in. These are colored on each side. You have your bolt catch and release here and on the other side, the standard side. You have your mag release here and a mag release here.

The lure is, again, really high quality and it has flared mag well as well just to help with a slightly easier insertion of your mags so it’s got a nice a little bit of a flared mag well so I do like that a lot as well. Then, again you have your standard fold assist dust cover and brass deflector as well so, yeah, very, very nice lower.

LMT Defense

Alright, so moving down to the trigger we have an LMT two-stage trigger, it’s pretty decent trigger, it’s not as nice as a Geissele SSAE trigger, but it’s definitely pretty decent nonetheless. You’ve got to say it is a two-stage so you’ve got a little bit of take-up with this here we’ve got a little bit of take-up, hit the wall, nice clean break, reset and then you’ve got a little bit of let out, very positive and tactile. And then below the trigger you have an enhanced trigger guard right here and again it’s branded LMT just gives you a little bit more room than even a curved one, it gives you a little bit more room to get your finger if you have gloves or something on.

One of the really cool things, again, this is one of the request from Estonia, was after you like, you know, with a FM used and an AR-15, once you fire that gun, if you want to put the safety on you’ve got to rack this again to reset, to put the safety on, not with these, all you got to do is switch the safety back on. It’s just a feature that required.

If you upgrade the trigger you’ll lose that feature, you won’t be able to do that. So, if you like the feature of just being able to put that safety on without re-racking the gun, don’t upgrade your trigger. So, I think it’s a cool feature, I do like that a lot.

Moving down we have an LMT grip. Now, previously they used to use ERGO grips but this specific grip has now been designed by LMT themselves and it has some ridges right here so finger grooves so you can get your hand in there. It’s got a slight… you can feel it’s got a little bit of… kind of a rubber, slight rubbery feel to it and then at the bottom here it’s got your little storage compartment. The only downside is it requires a screw driver to take the base plate off which I don’t love, just, you know, if you’re out in the field and you need to switch batteries, if you’ve got some batteries in here or something, it’s kind of a pain to take that off.

So, let’s do what I like to call the wiggle test and if there’s any wiggle between the upper and the lower receiver. Let’s go and have a look here.

Absolutely no play whatsoever.

Really, really, really great tolerance, they’re very, very nice indeed, zero play so, very cool.

Alright, let’s take a look at their enhanced bulk carrier grip, so let’s take this out. Ok, now actually one of the other things I like to do, I’ll just mention this, is with the buffer system, it comes with a standard stainless steel spring which lasts about 5 000 cycles and it comes with a standard H2 buffer with those weights inside. I like to use and switch out and I pretty much do this to all of my AR-15s, it’s just how I like to run my buffer systems, I like to run a Spike’s Tactical T2 Tungsten powder, you can hear that, so if you think about it when it slams back and forth with these weights and then you switch it out and you’ve got this powder if you can just imagine it, just being a little bit just it kind of smooths out just a little bit. So, I’m a big fan of these and then I put any damage industries , this is their buffer spring, I believe it’s made of piano wire but it has a cycle of five, 750 000 cycles. Not that I’ll ever hit that but it’s nice to know that I shouldn’t ever have to replace my spring. I really like that setup, I’ve been running it for years and it just works for me. Not that you have to upgrade it, you absolutely don’t, it’s just something I like to do.

Ok, let’s go back to the bulk carry grip. So, this is our enhanced BCG. Obviously it looks a little different, you know, don’t have a gas key and things like that because this is a piston-driven so you don’t have like a gas key with your stacking and things like that.

It has a special here to help protect it from wearing, things like that, it’s a special thing from LMT. So, then you have your bolt in here which is mp tested and you’ll have with the extractor, this is one of the enhanced parts, with the extractor with a kind of the lobster tail design. Instead of having one spring it has two under there so it has two springs under there, has that enhanced coating and some other features.

This piece up here isn’t like been added on, this is all one piece of the bolt, it’s been obviously a big block and then they’ve obviously taken it down and so this is actually a part of the bolt, it’s not added which is really cool so it’ll add to some rigidity and long life and things like that. So, very cool bolt design, I do like that a lot, it’s a little brand of LMT right there.

Obviously, I’ve gone over the features and things like that. Incredible gun, I’m absolutely in love with this thing but let’s go over shooting it. Shooting was great, I’m only about 250, 300 rounds through it just because ammo is still too expensive and things like that so. But my initial impression is just such an amazing shooter, such a nice firearm. So, yeah, I’m a huge fan, this is an extremely high quality AR-15, this is a top-tier AR-15, I kind of rate this along with Knight’s Armament, you know, obviously LMT, Noveski, Hodge, things like that. These are absolutely tier one Ar-15s.

LMT Rahe

Now, in saying that and going over all the awesome features that this gun has it does come with a big price tag.

Not surprising, right?

Alright folks, that is pretty much it from me. You have the budget, 100% recommended buying one. Very, very, very nice AR-15 just top-tier as I said. You know there’s a lot of really great AR-15 options out there so maybe you don’t want to spend the money on this, I get it, you know, there’s other excellent AR-15s that you can get for a lot cheaper, I understand that but if you want a top-tier AR-15 and you\re happy with the price, yeah, definitely recommended, very cool.
