Century BFT47 Review - Beefy is Just Right

Updated 51 months ago

Century Arms has long been a name in the AK market. They were one of the original importers of various AK platforms throughout the years, and recently they went from importing to producing. The Century Arms AK series has been rather expansive, and the latest out of Century is the BTF47. BTF47 is a bit of an odd name, and the last two numbers should clue you into the caliber. It's a standard 7.62x39mm AK platform.

The BTF is a weird one. Is it an AK derived from a KPop band? I BTF a type of sandwich? Does it stand for Blow the Fudge Out? Nope, nope, nope, and nope. BTF stands for Bulged and Forged Trunnion. Trunnions have often been the weak spot of American-made AKs. Forged Trunnions are the way to go with AKs. These ensure total reliability and allow you to use the gun for years and years of heavy use without issue.

The BFT47 provides that AK reliability everyone knows and loves. The AK's famously a very capable and reliable weapon. People love to tout that AKs can be rusted, buried, beat, kicked, and hammered on, and they will still fire. The BFT47 wants to bring that energy to the American AK market.

The BFT47 at The Gathering

The Gathering allowed us to get hands-on with the BFT47. The little rifle was equipped with a Midwest optic mount and a simple LPVO. The BFT47 comes with a side-mounted optic rail to make it easy to use the aforementioned Midwest optic mount.

Shooters had the opportunity to engage a few small steel targets roughly 30 yards from the shooter. The LPVO might not be necessary at this range, but it makes hitting those little steel targets exceptionally easy.

In the off-hand standing, I went five for five rapidly and easily. The trigger surprised me. It's free from AK trigger slap. It's relatively like and crisp. The BFT47 comes with the RAK-1 enhanced trigger group that does an outstanding job of cleaning up the AK trigger.

My first thoughts dialed into the weight of the gun. It's hefty heftier than most AK platforms. The 1.5mm receiver adds a fair bit of steel to the receiver. RPK light machine guns use 1.5mm receivers, and AKs typically use 1mm receivers. While the weight is noticeable, it's not a big deal. In fact, it not only adds to the rigid nature of the gun but helps reduce felt recoil.

The BFT47 certainly recoiled less than most AKs I've handled. It was soft shooting, accurate, and quite capable. The BFT47 comes equipped with a great trigger, but we also get the classic bayonet mount and cleaning rod. Century Arms added an enhanced safety selector that allows you to lock the bolt to the rear and a massive magazine release.

All In all, they took the BFT47 to new heights and equipped it with some standout features beyond the trunnion. I enjoyed blasting away with the BFT47 and look forward to seeing where Century takes the American AK market.
