XRT Special Threat Plate
The XRT special threat body armor plate is the perfect bridge between lightweight RF2/III+ plates and high-strength–but heavier–Level RF3/4 armor. The XRT covers a wide range of rifle rounds from AR and AK rounds and also many powerful 30 caliber cartridges, without adding unnecessary weight or cost.
At just 5.3 pounds (10X12 Shooter’s Cut) or 5.9 pounds (size SAPI medium) and only 0.75″ thick, this multi-curve RF2++ special threat plate also defeats some of the most prevalent and dangerous rifle rounds worldwide.
The XRT Special Threat Plate goes so far beyond RF2, it competes with Level 4/RF3. XRT also stands up to multiple impacts from M855A1, 7.62X39 API-BZ, M80A1. It even defeats the 7.62X54R B-32 API, taking it far beyond the traditional Level 3+ or RF2 body armor plate.
The XRT Special Threat Plate bests the NIJ RF1 standard by a mile. RF1 requires multiple M80, M193, and also 7.62X39 MSC impacts. These rounds are soundly defeated by plates made of only UHMWPE. Properly-made UHMWPE plates do not require any ceramic to defeat RF1. But because the world is filled with penetrator and armor-piercing rounds, NIJ also made RF2 and RF3.
The XRT Special Threat plate also bests the RF2 standard with plenty of breathing room. RF2’s meaningful addition over RF1 is the inclusion of M855; the famous ‘green tip’ 5.56 penetrator round. But RF2 also missed modern domestic threats like M855A1 and common foreign threats like 7.62X39 API-BZ. Despite RF2 offering a more robust testing category for sub-Level 4 plates, there are plenty of threats that defeat typical RF2 plates that don’t require the weight or cost of Level 4/RF3 plates.
High power domestic rounds like 5.56 M855A1 and also 7.62X51 M80A1 are available online and easily defeat most plates below Level 4/RF3. Soviet 7.62X54R API B-32 is far more common than you might think in the United States and across the world, and easily bests most RF2 plates. However, M2AP at 300WM velocities at extreme close range requires a plate to be built substantially beyond what’s necessary to defeat many other common high-threat rounds. The XRT Special Threat RF2++ plate splits the difference. The XRT saves almost 2.5 lbs of weight by sacrificing lab-spec velocity M2AP protection without giving up 7.62X54R B-32 API, M80A1, M855A1, and also more armor-piercing and penetrator cartridges.
For those facing high threat intermediate rifle cartridges from AR-15 and/or also AK-47 platforms–penetrator or not–the XRT Xtreme Rifle Threat Plate is an RF2++ plate that approaches Level 4/RF3 armor territory without the extreme weight of a Level 4 plate.
