Police later ran their own test that included 50000 rounds. Finally, a NATO test against major manufacturers from Austria, German and the U.S. ran 90000 rounds with the SAR9 the clear winner. However, the SAR9 has more to offer than just toughness and reliability. The lightweight polymer framed, striker fired, 9mm, SAR9 points naturally and is a pleasure to shoot. With a choice of three insertable back straps to customize fit, a low barrel axis to grip ratio to lessen muzzle climb and 20 degree grip angle providing superior control and fast second shot recovery. I have the tactical version of this with the optic ready , threaded barrel and fiber optic sights and I carry it every day while on duty. In fact after testing these for months and thousand rounds or so I put my HK VP9 in the safe and put this into service. I can't say enough about the SAR9. Super smooth shooting, accurate, super reliable and probably one of the most comfortable pistols I've ever handled. I am a state certified armed security officer and I also train and test new armed guards for the required state certification they must have. I have 30 years in law enforcement and or security with years of firearms training so I truly out these to the test and I was convinced enough that all my armed guards in my company are issued these. The added benefit is that IF something ever happened and included a firearm when the police investigate I'm not losing a much more expensive firearm. It's a win win!
Purchased the SAR9 with the 4.4" barrel a few weeks ago from Palmetto for $219.99 and have absolutely loved shooting it. So far, I have put around 350 rounds through it without a single failure to feed or failure to fire. The way it fits in my hand is perfect. The way it is manufactured, the firearm almost points itself. It just feels natural. Why spend so much more on anything else when this SAR9 performs just like the expensive firearms.
I like my SAR9 and this is about what I also paid for mine a while back when they had that $50.00 rebate. You'll be very happy with this gun at this price. Now I just need the new Gen 3 models to come down in price.
I bought one few years ago when they were this price with rebate, my only issue is what it seems the trigger bar is not timed properly to disconnect from striker and it tends to hang when you pull the trigger. The brake on mine is unpredictable at times. I tried polishing the ledge on the back of the bar but it's still the same.
I would try to source a black or spray black. Other than that, I've heard decent things.

It's worth shopping around on their site before buying. I just got the optics ready version of this same pistol for the same price as this non optic version deal. The deal for the non optics ready version (SAR9PT) was initially promoted in an email blast and it sold out in a couple of hours, max, after being listed here. There is still stock of the optics ready version for 199 as of the writing of this comment. The optics ready version is SAR9RDPT. Maybe it's a model generation thing and I got an older one?
