I have 5 of the larger boxes and they are nice, but I always felt the lid or handle was right on the verge of breaking when carrying them full of ammo. I've relegated these for the storage of medical supplies, gun accessories, cleaning kits, and other organizational duties. For ammo, I stick with the military-style 50 caliber steel cans. My LGS sells them for $17 and Gander Mountain runs sales occasionally. I like to apply labels with the caliber of ammo in each of my cans too and they just won't stick to the plastic over the long haul... Too slippery.
If you prefer plastic, the MTM ammo boxes seem to be a little more robust in my opinion and in the reviews I've read. You'll pay a couple bucks more for that though.
These are nice and I think the Plano cans are a little nicer than other brands of similar cans, I trust this latch style more as well. $7-8 is about what these go for normally & I have gotten them as cheap as $4. Cabela's larger cans were on sale for $7.99 a few days ago, they are made by Plano and have almost exactly 3 times the interior volume of these so they are a much better value in that regard. The smaller ones are convenient though and the larger cans are quite heavy when fully loaded.
I got two of these at Harbor Freight. $5.00 minus $1.00 with their "20% off any one item" coupon..... $8.00 for two of them.
How many boxes of 9mm/.223 will fit in this?
I fit 15 boxes in mine, but I reuse the small Herter's boxes and you have to pack them in tight. Probably weighs about 17lbs full.
you can fit 10 boxes remington or winchester 50 round boxes in this can federal is a little thicker box can not fit 10 of thoses but check out this item ik-216741 it's the bigger can and alot bigger you could fit twice that amount in that can . that's the can they give you with the bulk deals it's $14.99 but sometimes they had a sale for $8.99
Last time this popped up I bought a few thinking that they were the same boxes that Cabela's often bundles with ammo purchases. They are not, these are much smaller.
i bought one of these a while back it was small .then orderd the cabelas 9 mm 300 rounds with ammo can and the one they give you was bigger .so i orderd another one of the bigger ones it's $14.99 the item number is ik-216741 if you want to orded the bigger one

I have a lot of these smaller ones as well as the bigger ones. I use the smaller ones to take to the range (because they are not too heavy when full like the bigger ones); I use the bigger ones for bulk storage. These are lockable too, so sometimes I transport two pistols and mags in it (just the right size). Especially my Glocks since the Glock cases don't have a spot to put a lock.
I have seen the Harbor Freight one a few times, and this Plano one is better... and made in America. Will the HF one work? Sure, but I'll stick with Plano.
