The AR-15's bolt carrier group (or "BCG") is responsible for setting in motion the chain of events that leads to semiautomatic fire when the trigger is pushed. So that when the firing pin hits the primer, the bullet in the chamber is set off. The bolt carrier group of an AR-15 rifle or pistol performs the bulk of the firearm's most crucial functions, using the expanding gas from the projectile as its primary source of energy. There is a gas line that runs from the gas port on the barrel to the gas/carrier key on the BCG. This is the secret to pressurizing the BCG with the supersonic gas. With the BCG now free to move rearward, this action compresses the buffer and the buffer spring inside the buffer tube. After being compressed, the buffer spring quickly expands, sending the BCG hurtling back into the top receiver. The spent shell casing is expelled, and a new one is loaded into the gun's chamber. In comparison to a bolt-action rifle, all of this takes place in a fraction of a second.
