The Walther P38 is a historically significant firearm that became Germany's standard-issue military sidearm during World War II. It was introduced in 1938 and designed as a replacement for the Luger P08. The P38 was revolutionary for its time, featuring a double-action/single-action trigger system and a locked-breech mechanism, which allowed for safer and more efficient operation compared to earlier military handguns. It became the first military pistol to use this double-action trigger, a design that has influenced many modern pistols.
The P38 was chambered in the 9mm Parabellum cartridge and had an 8-round magazine. It was constructed using more cost-effective production methods, such as sheet steel stampings, allowing it to be produced in larger quantities than the Luger. Its design included a decocker safety, dual recoil springs, and a hinged locking block under the barrel. These innovations made it reliable and easier to manufacture in large numbers, leading to more than 1.2 million units being produced during the war. The P38 remained in service for several decades, and post-war variants such as the P1 and P4 continued production until the 1990s.
Collectors and enthusiasts appreciate the P38 for its historical significance, and it's known for its durability and robust design. Although it was primarily a military pistol, it was also used by various police forces and later sold commercially in the post-war years
