The Beretta ARX100 was introduced as a modern combat rifle designed to offer maximum versatility and ambidextrous functionality. Built using lightweight, high-strength polymers, the ARX100 featured a short-stroke gas piston system and a 16" barrel chambered for 5.56mm NATO. Its most notable characteristics included a quick-change barrel system, fully ambidextrous controls, and a side-folding adjustable stock. These features made the ARX100 highly adaptable and user-friendly, especially for left-handed shooters. Despite its innovative design, which also included integrated Picatinny rails and a lightweight build of just 6.8 pounds, the ARX100 faced challenges in the U.S. market, ultimately leading to its discontinuation in 2019.
The ARX100's downfall can be attributed to several factors, including its high price point and a design that some found aesthetically unappealing. Additionally, limited aftermarket support and compatibility issues with certain magazines, such as the popular PMAG M3, detracted from its appeal. Despite these challenges, the ARX100 was praised for its reliability, ease of maintenance, and ambidextrous features. The rifle performed well in various range tests, demonstrating its military-grade durability and effectiveness. However, the ARX100 struggled to compete with more established platforms like the AR-15, leading to its eventual withdrawal from the civilian market.
