In order to modernize the 92-series and standardize the Vertec platform, the 92x was released in 2019. Similar to the M9A3, it has a 3-slot Picatinny rail, a vertical grip that is thinner, detachable wrap-around grips that can switch between Vertec-style and "old" M9 style grips, fully replaceable sights (high visibility orange dot), and a universal slide that allows the gun to switch between decocker-safety and decocker-only modes. The barrel is not threaded, as opposed to the M9A3. There are compact, centurion, and full-size versions of the 92x series. Along with the 92x, the 92x Performance was released in 2019 as a competitive pistol. It has similar characteristics to the 92x, including a three-slot Picatinny rail, a smaller vertical grip, detachable wrap-around grips that can be switched between Vertec-style and "classic" M9 form, and dovetailed sights. On the other hand, the 92x Performance comes equipped with a red fiber optic front sight, an adjustable rear sight, front and rear slide serrations, a skeletonized hammer, a competition hammer spring, a steel spring recoil rod, an extended beavertail, front and rear frame checkering, an oversized magazine release, and a match takedown lever. The Vertec frame is constructed of steel. In contrast to the slide-placed safety of the basic 92x, the 92x Performance has a frame-mounted safety. The handgun has the Extreme-S trigger system, which considerably reduces trigger reset.
