Springfield SA-35 Review - Rebooting a Classic
The Browning Hi-Power goes beyond being a classic fighting handgun. The Hi-Power isn't just a great firearm but an innovative one. In 1935 the idea of a handgun that held 13 rounds seemed pretty crazy. The Hi-Power started what would become the age of wonder nines, and the world still sees that influence. The HI-Power has been out of production for a few years now, but Springfield has decided to revive the titan in the form of the SA-35.

Making a Hi-Power clone is a helluva undertaking. The Hi-Power is a beloved firearm that served across the world in military forces far and wide. Heck, in WW2, they were found in the hands of both Allied and Axis soldiers.

Springfield dominated 2021 with a number of firearm releases, including the SA-35. People were pleasantly surprised to see the Hi-Power swing back into action. The SA-35 isn't a one-for-one clone of the classic Hi-Power handgun. The Hi-Power was, without a doubt, a great gun, but it's a bit dated.
The original Hi-Power had a nasty habit of providing some hammer bite to your firing hand. The magazines do not eject freely, and the gun featured a magazine safety that really affected the single-action trigger of the Hi-Power. The Springfield SA-35 removes and fixes most of these flaws and allows the gun to keep up with current, modern firearms on the market.

Some extra beavertail provides protection from hammer bite. The mags drop free and now hold 15 rounds instead of 13. The magazine safety is gone, and the gun's trigger is significantly improved.
At the Range with the SA-35
Sadly, Springfield didn't attend SHOT Show. That left a lot of us wanting to get our hands on the new guns but no means to do so. Well, until the Gathering 2022, in which the SA-35 became a focal point at the range. I waited patiently in line to get my hands on an SA-35 and was pleasantly pleased when I did so.

It was love at first shot, and the trigger is insanely smooth. It's clean with very little take-up before you meet a light wall that breaks cleanly and consistently. The SA-35 featured zero hammer bite, and the weapon recoiled oh so lightly. I love a good polymer frame pistol, but nothing compares to a metal-framed handgun.
It's so smooth, and the recoil is so light. The grip is effortlessly awesome, and it accommodates your hand extremely well. The slide moves as if it's on ball bearings, and the trigger isn't far behind. The big sights make it plenty easy to get on target and to accurately aim the weapon.
The SA-35 delivers on the promise and the legacy of the original Browning Hi-Power, but it does so with minor improvements. The SA-35 brings back a classic and ensures it's ready to continue serving. It's easy to right these guns off as a classic clone that's a good novelty gun. However, the SA-35 isn't that far off from most modern pistols. I'd trust the SA-35 in a carry or home defense role.
