Description

***Backorders will be filled around June 11th.....don't shoot the messenger.

While some consider high pressure proof round firing and subsequent magnetic particle inspection to be archaic, the truth remains that US military rifles have their bolts undergo this strenuous test to absolutely ensure durability in the field.

Lewis Machine and Tool (LMT) is one of the few manufacturers that does HP/MPI testing one all their bolts and bolt carrier groups, and sells these premium components to civilians.

If you're looking for a proven, premium bolt carrier group to serve as the core of your rifle, this is what you want to get!

The LMT Bolt Carrier Group is one of the few premium bolt carrier groups available to civilians and law enforcement at an affordable price.

I can tell you 100% that colt does not make their own 9mm 32rd SMG mags. They used to only be made by metalform then colt did a short lived deal with c-products, found out they were awful, and offloaded them into their civilian 9mm carbines and kept all the metalform for gov/leo guns. People pay 50%($60+) more for the "pony" floorplate mags that are exactly the same as the metalform you can buy from brownells/midway for $40.

05/06/2013: Backordering ENABLED! LMT says we'll be getting our allotment of BCGs on June 11th. If this means completion of building, shipment, or delivery, we don't know... but we know they're coming!

Boy, American businesses sure have taken a back handed dump haven't they?

Can't be reached by phone to verify or ask ANY questions but will sure take your money. Unreal these days.

John,

Sorry for just posting the link. I didn't know on a copy how well it would show up. Does Colt really do all this testing, and others do not?

Well, I am not 100% sure, but I do know that Colt guards it's secrets pretty well. I can tell you that not all Colt parts are made by Colt, just out of a manufacturing standpoint that would not be reasonable. So they contract out like everyone else, from about 4-5 companies that make the majority of all Mill spec parts. CMT, LMT are the two major ones. There are a few Barrel companies that offer blanks as well, and another handful of companies that make all the pins and springs (Wolf).

Now, most variants come in Barrels, and Bolt Carriers. There are some that are Proof (HP) and MPI (Metal Particle Inspected) and some that are not. SOme are "Batch tested" meaning they test every 100th part, and then some that test EVERY ONE. LMT is the company that makes the majority of Bolt Carriers for the US MIlitary, and therefore must be true "Mil-Spec"....unfortunately there are many companies that claim "Mil-Spec" but that may just mean dimensionally in tolerance, and not necessarily manufactured according to "Mil-Spec"

To answer your question: YES, it is true that some companies test, and some do not. Colt is the contract winner for the M4 Carbine, while LMT also has a contract for such things as the SOPMOD kits and some other enhancements to the M4/M16.

Some things to look out for are Bolt material (8620, 158 carpenter, 3310, 9710) and then Receiver material (7075, 6061) Barrels can be Chrome lined, or double chrome lined for more accuracy (Noveske, Pac-Nor, Shillen) and they can be Hammer Forged machine gun steel (FN, Spikes, Daniel Defense, Noveske, PSA, BCM) .

The Colt is a great rifle, but in my opinion, you can get the same quality for less money if you know what parts to get. Building an AR-15 is pretty simple, but there are some important steps to follow to make sure it's done properly (Headspace check, Battery Check, Disconnector check, and torqued properly and properly staked) etc. If someone isn't equipped to do these things, it may be worth it to buy an assembled rifle.
