  • About 15 years ago I got my first Springfield M1A Loaded. I had wanted one for years, I think it’s one of the most iconic US battle rifles next to the M16 and M1 Garand. I would describe the M1A (civilian version of the M14) as a true battle rifle. You have the reliability, durability, and knock down power you would want in a battle rifle. The M1A SOCOM was introduced in 2004 and is smaller, shorter, and lighter than the M1A. This gives it a distinct advantage for CQB and heavy/thick cover. I would argue that it makes it an exceptional hunting gun even. The SOCOM version that I received had the Vortex Venom red dot on it. I was very impressed with the groups I was getting at 100 yards and the ability to hit steel out to 400 yards using Tula FMJ ammo. I wanted to really see what we could do with the groups for hunting and also really have some fun “BANGING” on steel at 500 yards….consistently. I put a Hi-Lux Long Eye Relief 2-7x32 with 3 post BDC Reticle scope on it, got it zeroed, and BINGO. Nailing the steel consistently out at 500 yards. Bottom Line: The M1A SOCOM 16 is the same reliable battle rifle as the M1A just lighter and more maneuverable. Accuracy is very expectable for what it is, if not better than expected. It is fun to shoot with minimal recoil and ate every kind of ammo I put into it and spit it out without hesitation.
