I was just at Cabelas this afternoon, they had a bunch of SW Sports, Oracles, Bushmaster, mossbergs, and Windhams on the floor from $729 on the sports to $999 on the Windhams. The Windhams had Diamondhead flip-up rear sight with dual-apertures and fixed-front sight.

With everything being back in stock again, I think I am going to wait for a "deal" again.

The diamond head rear flip up is a $129.. expensive but awesome. You can get the MPC which will have the front sight post for under $800 now and throw that diamond head on. You'd save well over $100 from buying at cabelas. If you plan to throw a scope or dot on a Windham though forgetting about irons, this is as sweet a deal you can ask for. Wasn't long ago the carbon model was this price

looking at this rifle, or the mp sport for $100 less. what do you guys think?

Have two of them. Thinking about buying another. I like them. How can you beat the warranty? SOSS has the one with the sights for about $40 more.

Depends on what you want to do. They share similar specs, except the MP sport doesn't have a forward assist or a dust cover. Most feel they do not need them, but that's your call.

The Windham has a slightly stronger barrel, but both have the same twist rate (1/9). At the end of the day, you won't see a performance difference.

If you don't need to purchase immediately, wait for a nice deal on a complete 1/7 barreled gun. You will have increased flexibility in ammo selection. The AR market in general is beginning to stabilize and prices are coming back down. Inventory is becoming increasingly more available.

Also what are you thinking about doing for optics? The Windham comes with nothing, but the MP has Iron sights. If you are going to purchase an optic, this isn't a deciding factor in the purchase.

If I HAD to purchase one of those 2 rifles, I'd opt for the Windham personally. I have been in situations where a dust cover was invaluable.

thanks for the replies, guys.. well, unfortunately for me, these will be banned in my state, july 1st. i had previously bought the sport (through Gander Mtn), but i traded it for a WASR and ammo. so now, i'm trying to get an AR again. i will have to say, i reaaaaaaally liked the sport. it is a nice rifle. and while i do know, it's not the old melonite, 1/8 twist, i still really liked the rifle.

the lack of FA, and dust cover don't matter to me. if only, maybe for resale. i have read lot's of good things about WW, and their warranty is probably the best there is, but S&W also has a lifetime.

optics dont really matter to me, hence why i am considering the sport again. adding a red dot to the ww, will add another $40. i can get the mp for $690 shipped. Buuuut, if the ww is THAT much of a better rifle than the Sport, i would spend the extra cash. thanks for the advice.

You had the Sport before and liked it right? Go with what you liked.

Where are you at that is banning ARs in July? I'm not in the loop. You may want to consider getting a few stripped lowers before a ban so that you may build or gift them to your children in the future.

I'm in CO.. they aren't banning ARs, but they are going to ban anything over 15 rounds. If you have them previous to 7/1, you are *supposedly* grandfathered. I can still buy an AR after, but will be limited CA compliance BS. I liked the sport, but it was my first AR, and at this point, I'm trying to get the best I can, since I won't be able to buy another hi capacity later.

That's not true. You can still buy any AR you want and have it shipped to CO, you'll just need to have them not send the mag or have your FFL keep the mag. I bought a bunch of PMAGs a few months ago so the mag ban wouldn't affect me at least for an AR. I live in CO too and all the new laws are stupid. They will do nothing to reduce crime.

Anyone else think this is a better buy than the SW Sport? This will be my fist AR and I just want to make sure I choose right. I bought the Troy one from Dicks In November but never got it. =(. Sport would come with Iron Sights and this does not. This comes with dust cover and forward assist Sport does not. Any other pro and cons anyone else can toss in? This + no tax and Sport + tax comes out to be about the same amount of money. Help me choose please!

I like this rifle. Chrome Lined barrel, and Forward assist, and dust cover aren't a big deal, but I also have had excellent customer service from Windham. Can't go wrong with this gun. Great platform to start out with.

This rifle adds a front sight post and carry handle with rear sight.

I saw that, but I think I rather have buis with a scope or maybe red dot? No room for scope or dot with that big o carry handle.

The Carrying handle comes off.....this gives you more options IMO. You can run it like this until you get a Red dot. Then the Front sight post will Co-witness with the red dot...it's a win win.

I'm bad at making decisions like that.. I don't have a long-range outdoor range anymore so I don't really need a scope, so I went the "best of both worlds" route.. I got a Red-Dot with a Flip-to-side magnifier :). I love it.

I have one. I am really happy with my rifle. I should have waited for prices to drop, bought mine at panic prices. Wanted to get started with AR, didn't want to wait. Mine is slightly different model, Heavy Barrel Carbine ("HBC"). I have since replaced furniture, removed handle, added Troy Battle Iron Rear sight. It is my first AR, and it has had zero issues. I actually want to get another one.

Carbon fiber? No carbon fiber here, this is a forged lower...the only thing plastic is the cheap A2 style handguards and pistol grip. I'm guessing you are trying to be funny, although Windham is making a carbon fiber rifle now, this is not it, do a little research.

I love how people throw the term "carbon fiber" around so loosely.

I don't know of anything made from true carbon fiber that is less expensive than its aluminum counterpart.

Cars, planes, guns or any variation of anything.

What makes this better than the Sport?

The S&W sport has no dust cover or forward assist, which depending on the user, it's not a big deal. I had a Sport, it's a good rifle. I have a WW SRC and it's a fine rifle, fully upgradeable and optic ready, i've put some coin into mine and it's a different rifle. It's not just a "first buyer gun" or whatever either, this rifle is super black, one of the blackest finishes i've seen. Recommended.

This one is Carbon Fiber? Sport is not? Thought people made fun of plastic ARs?

Kenny. Why a first time buyer gun? Their ads say better than Bushmaster, and the life time warranty. They sound really good.

They are exactly as they seem, very good. Johnmoses hit it dead on. I say great for first time buyer because it is a really high quality rifle so it won't sour you on the experience, it has everything you "need" (except sights) it is fully and easily customizable if and when you decide to do that, it is priced very competitively and the company is known for the great customer service. All that said, it obviously would be good for anyone but being so bare bones there are other more expensive rifles out there with less customization needed off the bat that are also high quality. This rifle is a great bang for your buck.

I have had nothing but great service from this company. I buy some of my bulk parts from them and they are very easy to deal with and bend over backwards to help their customers. Their prices are fair, and they assemble a quality rifle that others charge $200 more for.....

It is a great starter rifle. bare bones flat top...add an optic of choice and upgrade furniture if desired.

almost 100% back to pre hysteria prices. I believe this is the new price though. Good rifle for a first time AR buyer. (except for maybe the face that it lacks sights but it does have all railing needed to add them on easily enough.

Spot on re: preinsanity pricing. And now for the ammo....... still waiting. Makes sense I guess cinsidering every riflie could potentially equal 500-1000 rds stockpile
