Comment date 6/26/21: $650 seems high but my knowledge is limited. If I'm going to get an AK style it's going to be a VZ58 or a KUSA it's just like my Colt; buy once-cry once
The gun community is such an echo chamber.
The RAS-47 was a well-documented piece of trash. The VSKA had some initial QC issues - very much publicized by MAC. Since then (2018), this platform has gone on to have hundreds of thousands of happy owners with no IED events and multiple 5000+ round tests passed.
No, it’s not WPB, ZPAP, Ishmash, WASR (actually assembled better than my WASR, but that’s another story), or any other import. And no, it’s not as good as the American-made KUSA. But it’s at minimum a serviceable rifle with a lifetime warranty.
So this is just me obviously but I had a RAS47 back in the day and it was a decent rifle. Accurate, reliable and solid. I am going to have to look up the issues people hadnow
Totally a fair assessment from your personal experience with the RAS-47. Your experience was on the better half of a 50/50 chance at good vs bad. The unfortunate part was that some people actually experienced that rifle losing headspace stability and literally blowing up. Others just had less major issues. It was definitely a learning experience for Century.
The problem is that the RAS-47 was so well documented in the gun community that everyone was super skeptical about the VSKA, and at release, it had some issues. QC was better than with the RAS-47, but still wasn’t on-par with other U.S.A. brands - and was WAY off from European imports.
It still doesn’t compare favorably to the Riley RAK-47, Palmetto GF3/GF4/GF5, or KUSA - but it’s way better than the RAS-47, anything from IO, and pretty much all the remaining U.S.A.-made AKs. People just want to hate on it because they don’t trust Century to consistently produce a decent AK.
Really bothers me that they couldn't even put the mag in to take pictures to sell this.
