Thinking of buying one......my gripe right now is the insane cost of mags!
65-85.00 each for a plastic mag? Yikes!

Maybe someone could help answer this question:

I'm wondering if it's possible to put a slide fire\bumpski stock on either version (Wood stock OR fixed folding stock).
I would like to be able to have that option in the future, but have questions about it being a possibility with the fixed folding stock.
If anyone has any insight into the possible differences of the two I would appreciate it.

I pulled the trigger with Classic... damn you for being such a good deal... 10/12 round mags were hard to track down but I found them at Carolina Shooters Supply (http://www.carolinashooterssupply.com/category_s/1830.htm...) and used coupon code CSS to get an extra 10% off... not a bad deal.. figured they'd be hard to track down in the near future with a large amount of these guns being sold... anyone have a spot to grab a SGM 25 rd drum?

Not sure whether to get the laminated wood or fixed tubular stock version. Please weigh in. Curious about cheek weld, value, and ability to change stock for each. Cannot find much on the web. Thanks for any assistance.

Awesome gun.

For everything you could want to know about it, try the VEPR12 forum at vepr.org. Regarding the two models, the stock is not the only difference. I don't remember the lengths, but the barrel is longer on the fixed stock version. Also, the latch for unlocking the folder include a hole in the left side of the receiver. Functional for sure, but I don't like the way it looks. Also, consider whether it has an ambidextrous safety. If you are right handed, the right side safety is enough--no need for the extra safety switch hole in the left side of the receiver.

Recently I put 150+ rounds through my fixed stock in one session and was not even close to being tired of shooting it. Definitely my favorite gun to shoot *but* I have customized it with a folding/collapsible stock, aftermarket grip, muzzle brake, quad rail, red dot, and modified Tapco G3 trigger.

The fixed folder (which *can* be "unwelded", hasn't quite grown on me yet. I do like the feel but not enough to get excited about it. One thing to consider is that no matter which one you get, you need to figure in the cost of the accessories you are going to get. Plan on spending money at carolinashooterssupply.com--they have just about everything you need, including stuff to make it 922(r) compliant. If you get the fixed stock, plan on replacing it. Mine came with a Tapco fixed AK stock. I replaced it with a left folding/collapsible stock from http://bonesteelarms.com/.... Great quality and works like a champ.

I suggest looking for alternatives to the full blown quad rail--it looks awesome but adds too much weight. You only need rail sections where you are going to mount accessories. A top rail for a red dot for sure, a side rail section for a light, and a bottom rail section for a vertical foregrip maybe. I don't have a VFG but it would be a good accessory. I think there is a company that makes a foregrip section with only a bottom rail (would be good for a VFG that has a built-in light) but I don't remember who makes it.

For home defense, the VEPR12 is an amazing weapon *but* keep in mind that if using 00 buckshot it is only practical at distances of up to about 15 ft. The reason is because at that distance the pattern spreads enough that you start getting enough of a possibility of a pellet missing the target and causing collateral damage. The effective range is well beyond that but in a home defense situation inside the house, all pellets need to be on target because they can easily penetrate multiple walls.

On a related note, don't be fooled by the Winchester "Military Grade" 00 buckshot. I don't question that it is military grade but Rio Buck 00 buckshot holds a tighter pattern, so it is a more appropriate round for home defense. Also, I have probably shot around 200 rds of rifled slugs through it. The gun handles them fine but the plastic fouling in the barrel is wicked.

Bottom line is that this is a spectacular gun at a great price but before you buy, figure out what the total cost will be by deciding what accessories you will be getting.

BTW, thankyou to all you post comments on gun.deals. You have helped me tremendously.

I ordered two of these and hope I won't be disappointed! I think in the future with the crap going on in Russia these will be very hard to find!

My only hang up here is the lack of available "custom" accessories for the VEPR compared to the Saiga. SGM mags appear to be readily available, but I want to be able to outfit the thing like I would a Saiga. I realized that the VEPR has many other advantages, but damnit!

One note on this version with the fixed stock (fixed & wood) compared to the folding stock, is that AK buttstocks will supposedly swap easily with the fixed-stock versions, but WON'T with the factory folding stock. Just something to keep in mind.

I have not found that to be an issue. You can trick out a VEPR12 nicely. Regarding the SGM mags, I find them to be less reliable than the factory VEPR mags but still ok for fun shooting. The SGM 12 rd mag is a very clever design. I have read that you can cut it below one of its ridges and put the floor plate on the ridge to have a reduced capacity mag. I haven't tried it but it's a very cool design if it works well.

I was able to put a mako recoil reducing AK stock on mine with a little fitting. If you get the folding tube stock version why would you ever change it? Its as close as you can get to the actual shotguns used by the russian police and special forces.

Nothing more than personal preference. I've never cared for side folders on any platform. I'd much rather have an AR style collapsible stock.

But just to clarify, you were able to fit that AK stock on the fixed or folding stock version?

Somebody convince me that I don't need one of these. Please.

What's the bottom price on these things? Will we soon see 700? 600?

All i can say is that the Vepr blows everything else away including the coveted 1200 dollar KSG ... Its built like a darn Tank and the original russian folding stock alone is worth at least 200 bucks. The only downside I see is the plastic dust cover rail it comes with (dont ask me why). Its a no brainer at 799. I mentioned a few months ago these would drop to 800 dollars and you should have seen the responses i got. Well here we are :).

Ummm - you're supposed to be convincing me that I DON'T want one. The threats from my wife that I'll be living in a van down by the river aren't working. In fact, that sounds rather peaceful...

Great guns at an unbelievable price with FREE shipping. I already own one and just bought two more from Classic! They're that good and at this price a real steal

Still way overpriced. They are selling the wood stock one for $150 cheaper. That is still overpriced but dang you could buy a sweet AK replacement stock for $150.
Better option is to stop buying these at these extreme prices so we can teach the russians to stop screwing us. I don't blame the retailers. They are just being screwed by the Reds.

Those folding stocks are like $300 if purchased separately, even from an unreliable overseas seller. Of course, it's welded open, but you can cut it open. I'd go with the folder stock either way. Hopefully prices get closer to Saiga prices, but I doubt it.

3% credit card fee plus $3.50 adult signature fee, plus shipping cost, plus the listing on their site says the furniture is unfinished and "may" be cracked or broken and no "hardware" is include. This is crazy.

Some Vepr models that they sell have importation "place holder" furniture. That's nothing new. All their Veprs are still top notch tho.

Yea, the idea is that you just add a stock of your choice once you get it, some come with what appears to be firewood for furniture. The downside is that not only do you have to buy a stock, but the VEPRs that do come with properly made furniture have really nice wood and a really nice finish.
