The Modello 1951 (M1951) was the first Beretta chambered for the 9 x 19mm (Parabellum) cartridge and also their first locked-breach pistol. This semi-automatic pistol was first placed on the market and adopted by the Italian Armed Forces in 1957. A commercial version, known as the M951 Brigadier, was produced for sale on the civilian market.

Retaining traditional Beretta characteristics, the M1951 introduced a locked breach to handle the high-pressure 9mm Parabellum, a lengthened slide for improved balance, and a single column, 8-round magazine, ergonomic finger-rest extension. The M1951 was only produced with forged steel frames.
