I can tell you from experience that soft body armor degrades fast past the expiration. Do not buy this expecting any protection at all beyond a .22lr. Spend another $50 or so and get something new made that'll be good for a few years.

13.5 lbs is a little heavy for soft panels isn't it?

These should be complete wrap-around panels so the weight adds up rather quickly. About same weight as the old 'Interceptor Body Armor.'

I could imagine using this to compliment ar500 plates to protect against spall.

I'm all about buying used and military surplus, but used kevlar is just a bad idea IMO. It starts to break down when exposed to heat/moisture. III and IIIa inserts are fairly cheap, so why not just buy new?

I agree, not the category to go budget on. Could be recalled armor. Could have improper storage creases. Could be useless Zylon. Definitely going to be irredeemably funky sweat smelling. Get brand new iiia panels with galls frequent 20% off + free shipping sales and a cheap cotton blend carrier and be gtg for five years. By buying brand new you also get a recall notice if it loses NIJ certification.

If you are really on a budget and are physically fit I suggest abandoning the concealability aspect and go with rhino lined 1/4" ar500 and a plate carrier.
