These cans look the part but will fool you. I can normally fit 20 boxes of 9mm in a 50 cal can but not in these. I checked the 50rd ammo boxes as the manufacturer some times change the size of the box or design. And my old boxes of ammo that I was pulling out of an old ammo can was not fitting in the Stout stuff can. This freaked me out until I found I was able to fit the Stout Stuff can inside my old fifty cal can. So Stout Stuff is not a true 50 cal can at all but can nest with them like the 30 cal can but without having to take off the lid.

Nowhere does Walmart say this is a .50cal can. They even list the dimensions of the Stout Stuff can and if you take a few minutes to compare it to a .50cal can you would see that it's smaller. So why would you think this is a comparable can? And other commenters say this is junk, Chinese junk at that. Yet, if you go to Walmart's site, this can rates 4.5 out of 5 stars with 128 reviews. Actual purchasers don't seem to think this is junk. And as for this dislike for Chinese products, I think that is comical. Take a walk through your house. Bet at least half your stuff was made in China. I haven't bought this can. I'm a huge fan of MTM. And an MTM .50cal can is bigger than a true .50cal metal can.

I purchased for $6.99 last Feb from Walmart.

TL;DR
Not water tight, poor specs and build quality.

Admittedly, I hate Walmart-Mart so take this for what it’s worth...

I broke down and ordered 4 with in-Store pick-up, when I got them home I noticed all four were slightly buldged.

This gave me pause so I checked water tightness.

After filling them 3/4 the way up with sand and checking to make sure all the rubber gaskets were well seated I sealed them.

I placed them in water 18 inches deep and two immediately proved to be leaking- bubbling off way to much air to be be just what’s under the lip and between the hinge gaps.

I left them submerged for less than 20 minutes. Afterwards, two of the four had leaked a substantial amount of water, a third had leaked less but still enough to say it failed. Only one of the four would I call water tight- and I wouldn’t trust that it would seal up adequately next time.

These are no better than the plastic HF, Plano or MTM ones.

Very well made. I own several. I would definitely NOT call these junk. Made in China-yes, junk-no. A deal if ya ask me.

These are not water tight, which is why people are calling them junk. Made in China is a bad thing to many Americans, plus they do not keep ammo stored appropriately. I will also call these junk and say there are better products out there.

I have been keeping a bag or two of the desicant packs that I buy in ziplock bags from the factories that sell them in different sizes, etc and I always put some in all my ammo cans and gun case, Amazon has several types.

I've been buying .50 cal like new mil surplus cans from Ammuntion Store for $7.99. http://ammunitionstore.com/products/50-cal-ammo-can-m2a1-military-surplus-like-new.html... They arrive basically looking new.

Shipping is the best deal per can on orders of 12 cans (about $24 to me). Over 12 cans and the shipping jumps. Below 12 cans and you don't save much on the total shipping.

The Stout Stuff cans are smaller. I can fit one inside a Blackhawk .50 cal can and close the lid. I guess you can double up when storing your defense or high dollar match ammo. I need to get a fat 50 can to see if I can triple layer it.

Tractor Supply had their 50 cal cans marked down to $7.99 in store when I was there last Friday. They had a mossy oak top to them but were their normal metal ammo cans. Ones without the mossy oak were reg price. Tractor Supply cans are a lot better made than the Walmart ones.

Still waiting for some entrepreneur to start making these from ALUMINUM so they will never rust, weigh less, and can be offered in a red, blue, clear, etc. anodized finish(es) so you can color code the tools, etc that you *actually* use them for & save the OD green for the occasional, albeit rare, ammo storage needs ['cause, you know, tradition!] ;-)

When it comes to ammo cans I just buy the .50/.30 pack from Costco every time they go down to $14.99. Hard to beat for 7.50 for brand new cans that are as nice as they come. Now if I can just stop buying ammo...

True, but I have no desire for a large number of .30 cal cans. I wish I could buy just the .50 cal cans from Costco for like $9.

Also, some of the .50 cal cans from Costco have the bottom bowed out a bit and you have to pound it in a bit with a wood block & hammer in order to get it flat for them to stack nicely, otherwise they wobble a fair bit when stacked.

I was hoping PSA would sell 12 of them for $80 shipped again for Black Friday/Cyber Monday like they did in the summer. Those cans were okay after adjusting them slightly with a wood block & hammer.

So find someone who shoots [buys/stores] more pistol ammo than rifle, and prefers the 30cal can so they're still luggable when full, and work out a buy/swap arrangement. Everyone wins...

Got a couple of these. They aren’t the same size as a 50 Cal ammo can. Kinda disappointing.

Thanks for the data point. I should check them out: I prefer 30cal cans for their greater portability, but they don't stack stably the way 50cal cans do. Maybe these will be the best of both worlds? Don't have much need for actual 50cal ammo storage, since I live behind the Granola Curtain and 50BMG is malum prohibidum, and regular 50cal cans are overkill for my purposes...

Ya, these are complete JUNK! They are smaller in size then the REAL .50 cal ammo cans (by a small amount) and the metal used is just not up to snuff in my opinion... Go to Harbor freight w/ a 20% off coupon and grab one of those, cause they are twice as good as these for just a few more $$

I use these for ammo storage air and water tight, good price. They have a strong chemical smell when first opened new (air tight), let them air out for a day and good to go. They stack and look just like the 50 cal military surplus cans I have.

Made in china as usual. These are not bad if you are going to use them to haul ammo, etc to the range. The ones from midway that comes with a smaller can are constructed better and feel more solid.

Get you a 5 gallon bucket, lid, and liners for less than $5, holds twice as much as one ammo can - home depot.

Doable, yes. Practical, no. Plastic is thin and would fail a drop test of likely no more than 1 ft under that much pressure, provided you could pick it up that far. The handle? Forget it; it would snap at half full. Don't forget the cost of the dolly you will need to move it around.
A better option on the cheap would be 2 liter soda bottles. They are portable, transparent or translucent, hold plenty of rounds and come with a nice airtight seal already built in.
Just spit balling here. No offense.

The image of someone walking up to the range with 2 liter bottles in each hand made me chuckle. You’ve got a good point, but I wonder about a gallon milk jug with screw on lid? What do you guys think?

What do I think?....I think if you can't afford a $10 ammo can that is optimized for hauling ammo than you probably are in the wrong hobby.

The ammo in the can dwarfs the cost of the can especially after the 10th refill.

I got one in-store yesterday. Not a bad deal, but not as good as when CostCo had their Ammo can (.30 and .50 cal cans) for about $16 during their promotion/discount period.

I bought two of these over a year ago. So far, they are sturdy and airtight.

When I bought mine, I noticed that some of the cans stacked better than others. I don't know if that's still the case, but I'd recommend checking them out.

Not overpriced! they usually cost $12 or $15. You don't even pay shipping if you pick it up at Walmart. It's a good deal I bought 3 33boughtbought33. Yes

A bought one these about 2 years ago. They're well constructed. Mine hasn't been abused but its not rusted to shit and the gasket is still doing fine and the paint isn't all chipped off.
