So in actuality it's not a great deal better than buying it in the case with two mags. Of course the prices on all these will go up and down depending on the seller and market. S&W maybe doing that too. I picked up a 5" FDE M&P 2.0 at a good price. It came in and was in a cardboard box which surprised me since my others came in a nice case. At least it had all the goodies with it!

I bought my wife a shield and it came in a box too. I guess these makers are all cutting costs and offering guns cheaper.

Can confirm, even my performance center shield came in a cardboard box. I keep my pistols in other storage anyway, so I don't mind the cardboard box. I hold onto the boxes in case I ever decide to sell anything.

I actually don't mind not getting the plastic box and cleaning tools if I can save a few dollars on the deal. I've got proper storage, so I chuck or give away the boxes. As long as I get everything else - magazines, back straps, etc. I am okay.

I agree, all those plastic boxes do is take up space.
I have XDm boxes all over my bedroom.

When did this "defenders series" tag start? Is that just what they call it when dropping the price but only including one magazine? Inquiring minds wanna know!

Yea its just this years rebrand of the legacy xd line. They are trying to move it into the class with the Smith and Wesson Sd9VE. Xd may be arguably a higher quality pistol than the sd9 but it is minus all the bells and whistles they used to sell with the xd.

Yep, looks like it started quite recently. Basic XD with one mag in a cardboard box and no other goodies. MSRP for full size and compact $339.
