The gods honest truth is I'm glad. You should have a gun that runs great out of the box, that was sort of my point. I literally got pissed at S&W because think about it, how many times would send any gun back to any manufacturer for service? I thought four times was excessive and it still didn't run right. When they told me to send it back a fifth time I insisted on a new gun. They said we will fix it at which point I said screw it. I did buy it brand new and it was on it's way back after the first range trip.

I'm not an unreasonable person but then Special Ed as we called him started trolling me and the fun began. It became a troll war with a grade-schooler so yeah guns kind of took a back seat. Back on track I've got a M&P on it's way so S&W is getting another chance. I doubt the caliber had anything to do with it, I think the grey frame reissues frame was way out of spec. I honestly don't know but if some BS goes down I would rather the PD take a sub $300 M&P then one of my Berettas. They were twice as much. My point is a gun has to be reliable to be used for self defense. MY SD9 wasn't and that's a gross understatement.

Now I wait for Special Ed, Twinkle or TacticalToilet to flame this post. Then the fun will continue.

I sure am glad all these OPINIONS can't change the fact that mine and so many others have been FLAWLESS. Had I listened to all this BS I might have missed out on a fantastic pistol.

For YEARS we've all heard what a diamond in the rough this thing is and for the $231 I paid for mine, I couldn't be happier. Could the trigger be better? Sure. Is it as bad as some say? I don't think so. What are you asking for? It's a sub $250 Self Defense Value Enhanced weapon, not a custom tuned target pistol. Get over it. IT'S A NON ISSUE.

Thers is NO trend of these guns being problematic, it's not a Sig p365 or a Kimber 1911. There's been no recalls. A simple google search reveals there's TONS of positive reviews from LEGITIMATE companies and websites like TTAG, APEX and others.

At $200-$250 there simply isn't a better deal on a more dependable, accurate or higher capacity pistol on the market. See past the attention starved BS and buy with confidence.

You are about 500 rounds away from the end of life of your pistol. Read the reviews or watch the videos, 3000 rounds are about all these guns are made for. You get what you pay for and these are not made to last.

I have not seen a video or a review that says such a thing. Perhaps you can link a video or an article? SD 9VE has been great for me

I’ve put in over 500 rounds or more through it. Goes boom every time. Except twice. And that was in the box of shells.

Every review from every expert I've ever seen says this is an excellent gun. IraqVeteran8888 and Hickock45 both gave it their seal of approval.

And Hickock45 shot it for what?Half an hour? That is like a popular Nascar driver taking a car out for a 30 minute drive and giving it their seal of approval.I would rather ask someone who actually owns the car and has owned it for a few months to a year and has driven it more than 10-15 miles.

Hickock also gave gun control his seal of approval, so that one isn't worth much anymore.

Stop wasting your time buying these type of guns . I learned the hard way so just trying to save you your hard earned money . Buy a quality gun for home defense/ edc . Your life is worth the few extra dollars . This gun at best is strictly a range gun PERIOD

Absolutely true! These guns are really hit or miss. If you get a lemon like I did then you realize that S&W really does not give a damn about their low end guns or even their high end guns. Smith and Wesson may have an awesome "written" warranty but in the end I bought a gun that was a sick joke.

These guns leave the factory without any QC checks at all, S&Ws CS acts like you are bothering them when you call them and while some of these guns MIGHT actually work, I personally think that the ones that are reviewed are tweaked before they are sent out.

I have a pretty large safe full of handguns, from $200 Taurus's to $3000 custom 1911s. I also have rifles and shotguns but that's not important. If I buy a gun brand new regardless of the price or brand I expect it to work. Occasionally you will get one that needs to go back and I have never had any gun that had to go back more out of the box except for this one. After 4 trips back home, a scratched slide during repair and more problems each time this was not even a gun that you throw in the console and forget about.

This "gun" was all show and no go and should have been just replaced but S&W wasn't having it. I talked to some people pretty high up the ladder for a $300 POS and believe me the whole experience has left me with a pretty bitter feeling about S&W.

They used to have a few service centers across the USA and I never sent a gun that needed service to Mass. I strictly sent my S&W guns that needed service to LSG in Texas BUT S&W Closed All USA Warranty Stations 12/15/2016. Frank Smith owner/gunsmith at LSG always treated you right and fixed the problem and kept you informed of your repair. Now when you send it to S&W HQ the
"gunsmiths" don't even bother to read the note you are supposed to include and I think just for fun will put gouges and scratches on your gun, this is pretty well documented on YouTube.

As for a "range gun" as I remember it there was so much slop between the slide and frame that accuracy suffered when it wasn't jamming or dropping magazines. If it ever ran right it would be fun just to see if you get it accurate but I'm pretty sure that after one of the trips back S&W had switched my slide and barrel with some other one that was on the "gunsmiths" bench. He probably had 50 of these sitting there needing work. When I bought the gun the slide and frame were tight but like I wrote below S&W had the gun for longer then I did.

This will definitely be my LAST new S&W until they sell the company again. I love how people say "I love my M&P 2.0, it's great after I did the Apex trigger mod." $500 for a gun that has such a lousy gritty trigger that it NEEDS to be replaced. Why would you buy one knowing that you don't like the trigger?

I suggest you take a good look at a Ruger Security-9 for under $300. IMO it's a better "low end" gun that is probably better then anything that S&W is cranking out. Is the Ruger a HK-USP9? No but they both actually shoot. S&W not so much, that's why Glocks are so popular, at least they shoot. New Smith and Wesson's are garbage and their CS sucks. They are selling a name and not many quality products. Their service dept. is atrocious.

Here's a good read about for those who want to lighten your trigger pull on a SELF DEFENSE gun that could keep somebody out of prison/debt or both. It's from Massad Ayoob and he does know what he's talking about. If you buy a gun for self defense and have to modify the trigger, buy a different gun. Apex and Galloway Precision might not like it but don't expect them to testify for you in court.

Just because I had serious problems with the SD series is of no relevance in this. My EDC is 100% bone stock and there's a reason for that. This article applies to any gun that has a lighter then factory trigger UNLESS the manufacturer did it and you have documentation from them to prove it. If not DO NOT modify your trigger group. Read the link below, it explains why.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/concealed-carry-self-defense/419191-facts-about-light-trigger-pull-liability.html...

Are there any instances you can show that making a trigger pull lighter will land you in jail?

Surely diabetic neuropathy and carpal tunnel from computer work would be valid excuses for changing the trigger, springs, etc. assuming they even notice it.

0 votes
0 votes

If you clicked on the link then you know THEY WILL NOTICE (your gun is taken from you and thoroughly tested) and even LEOs have been called into question for trigger mods. You don't modify your trigger on a Self Defense gun period especially if you want to use carpal tunnel as an excuse. The prosecutor is come right back at you with "If you have the strength to do home gunsmithing then surely you have the strength to pull a trigger." That's Massad Ayoob who has only testified in more then 100 SD shooting cases, I'm sure he knows what he's talking about so you might want to do your homework on him. If you carry any CCW insurance trigger mods void your policy so read them carefully.

If you can get the trigger lightened by Smith and Wesson using SMITH AND WESSON PARTS with documentation then you might have an excuse in court. I guarantee there isn't ONE LEO that has an Apex trigger on his M&P and their triggers aren't much better. Buy a different gun if the 8.5lb trigger is an issue, the Ruger Security 9 has a much lighter and crisp trigger stock for about the same price.

BTW: You ARE going to jail for at least 12 hours while the PD investigates a shooting. Trigger mods are what lands you in prison.

Sounds like it would be pretty easy to defend, one of the first rules you are taught about carry a firearm is only draw your weapon as a last defense against a threat.

0 votes
0 votes

An aggressive SA will bury you for a lighter then stock trigger. Yes you are taught to draw only to shoot BUT some legitimate shootings get prosecuted. It isn't what you think it is, the PD shows up and you get thrown in the back of a squad car. It isn't like you are treated as a hero, after a SD shooting you are a suspect and have to be cleared or charged.

If charged it isn't "easy" to defend, you need to hire an attorney because you could go to prison. Didn't anybody click on the link? If cleared you still face the possibility of a civil lawsuit and believe me that attorney is going to use that Apex trigger against you to their fullest advantage. The moral is you could end up in prison/broke or both. To make a long story short you will have your gun confiscated, you will sit and be grilled for hours. Any witnesses that you think will make your case could end up blowing your case. Talk with any NRA qualified instructor or watch some videos on YouTube with Massad Ayoob. Hell if you have some cash take one of his classes. The one thing that is a constant is you never modify your trigger. This is from a lawyer that has defended both criminal and civil SD shootings:

"Criminal liability.........how many folks spent good money and time trying to reverse the misconception of a "light trigger" That is the point. The preponderance of evidence (real, imagined or fabricated) is what convinces a jury to convict for manslaughter/murder/negligent homicide.
Continue to ignore the issue if you choose. I choose not."

When you buy a gun that has a SELF DEFENSE TRIGGER / SDT™ - Self Defense Trigger (that's what S&W calls the trigger on this gun) and modify it then you asking for trouble. It can be the cleanest shoot in history and that trigger mod can put you behind bars. If you want to spend 100K "easily" defending the possibility of going to prison or losing all of your money in a civil judgment the go right ahead and lighten your factory trigger. Make sure you also put CRIMINAL KILLER paint and decals on your pistol.

I took my CCL course from a bunch of active duty cops and an hour of the 16 was NEVER put silly nonsense on your EDC gun and NEVER modify your trigger but go right ahead, the cops are only the first people you will deal with after a SD shooting. If S&W would have gotten my SD9 to run right it was going to be my truck gun and be 100% stock. I don't consider 8.5lbs unruly. The magazines falling out while shooting was the final straw, not the trigger.

If the you buy one of these and it is reliable, don't modify the trigger if you value your freedom and money.

I'm done with this, modify your gun at your own risk OR you could just spend your money on a gun with a lighter trigger. It's your choice.

Very true. Saw a gun lawyer video recommending you keep your carry gun stock. Not only internally but cosmetically as well. No punisher or dickbutt or don't tread on me crap or crazy paint jobs. I have some fun stuff but my glock is stock save sights and slide plate and that's just because I wanted them steel.

Everyone talking shit about having to put an after market trigger on this gun. Yeah get a GLOCK there way better lol. You buy a Glock. You have to switch out THE TRIGGER, the sights stipple it to a sandpaper feel an by any means NO ALUMINUIM cassings or I'll make my gun look weak. Lol fuck that shit, I think that's why S&W will rather pay royalties to Glock an keep making this for the common man

After buying a SW9D in grey/black I will never buy another S&W again. FIRST all of you who are modifying your trigger on a SELF DEFENSE gun do not the know the legal ramifications if you actually use it for self defense. The trigger is the least important problem with this gun. It really isn't that bad after you get used to it but that being said.....

Second and more importantly the SD series in 9mm in absolute garbage and S&W isn't standing behind their products anymore. Long story short mine was at S&W more time then I owned it. The slide refused to lock back out of the box after the 2nd magazine and from there it just got worse. After the 2nd service trip magazines just would fall out for no reason while target shooting. As the owner of 9 S&Ws (5 of which were bought new) this gun was literally the only S&W that I sold. I owned it for about 6 months and dumped it at a loss. I'm glad to be rid of it.

Its funny that this gun is called a "Glock Clone" was the most unreliable gun I have ever owned. It stovepiped, double fed, magazines just fell out, the slide wouldn't lock back and the slide just rattled on the frame (it's junk, VE stands for no QC) . Basically it was a one shot large derringer. These guns don't even go through QC and S&Ws service has gone to crap or the SDs are just put in a large pile until they fix the M&Ps. A 6 week turn around just to get it back with MORE problems then you sent in for? This gun feels like a $100 gun and I'm sure S&W doesn't even spend that much manufacturing them. Spend a extra $100 and buy anything else, my circa late 90's sigma is an HK compared to this POS. Plus if you cant load 16 rounds in the magazines you are doing something seriously wrong. Really if you only have $250-$350 to spend buy a Taurus, I have never had the issues with one that I had with this POS when I used to buy cheap guns. Say you get one that isn't garbage by the time you add the Apex trigger kit to get light primer strikes and upgrade the guide rod, you could have bought a decent handgun and wont have to explain in court how your trigger group isn't within factory specs with factory parts. Don't believe the hype on this "handgun", it's really a piece of junk and S&W knows it but hey if S&W is giving you one for free to "test" well then of course it's great.

To quote a much shorter review on here "A shitty pistol". I agree 100%, the plastic even looks and feels cheap.

I agree it’s a piece of excrement, but it’s better than a Taurus for God’s sake. Mine worked fine from factory, I upgraded the recoil spring and guide rod with one for a Glock 19, Gen 1-3, with a 20 pound spring. I also upgraded the trigger later and it was ok, I would not recommend replacing the rest of the springs, I did and went back to using the factory springs (I did keep in the gun the Glock 19 Gen 3 recoil spring and guide rod). Another thing I did was to polish every metal part that rubbed agains plastic or metal to remove the gritty feeling in the trigger and in my opinion if I had to do it all over again, I would only have done the polishing job.

I would agree with you UNTIL I bought this gun that bears a S&W logo. Most Taurus's are complete junk but most go boom. Some might go boom when you don't want them to but they still go boom. My wonderful S&W SD9 was back for service FOUR times and no joy.

This gun was a factory lemon that if lucky you would get off one shot and it would jam. I literally had issues from my first time shooting it until the last. It didn't make 50 rounds and it was on its way back to S&W.

Basically for a self defense pistol it was useless. After 4 trips back for service I had enough. Save this gun for the ghetto where it belongs. I cannot express how disappointed I am in S&W after buying this "gun". They did not care that it was totally useless as a firearm and really all I wanted was a cheap truck gun.

Normally I would say no comparison between Taurus and a S&W but after dealing with the new and approved S&W I'm going to say they are on the same path as Remington. My SD actually had almost a quarter of an inch of play side to side between the slide and frame. S&W said this huge rattling gap was "normal".

If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't buy a new S&W, this was like buying a new car and having a tire come off two blocks away from the dealership and them saying it was normal. After four service trips back lets just say the doors wouldn't stay closed, it would start if felt like it and after every trip back it would just get more ridiculous.

I knew I was buying the Yaris of guns with this one but I expected say 5,000 miles out of it. This POS didn't get to it's first oil change. It's sad to say but I had a couple of Taurus's that were BMWs compared to this junk.

My major complaint is that S&W had a few chances to make it right and just did not care. After the second time back when it just started dropping magazines I said "could we just replace this lemon?". Instead S&W just paid more in Fed Ex charges. The work orders would come back with stuff I didn't write - "slide doesn't lock back after last round". NO I wrote slide doesn't lock back. "Magazines loose in frame" - NO I wrote magazines would fall out for no particular reason on multiple occasions.

No more new S&Ws for me, this "gun" was almost comical if I hadn't wasted time and some money on it. I understand that S&W is in financial trouble but my SD was useless and think about it, four trips back for service and it still wouldn't run? I think they let their apprentice smiths work on these and $9/hr. labor build them.

Never again, I would rather buy a Glock and I'm not a Glock fan.

For now I'm enjoying my P320, no more cheapo ghetto guns. This not a gun to trust your life with and for a S&W that's pretty sad.

Objection. Hearsay.

Every "OPINION" posted on here is hearsay. I wouldn't bash on S&W unless the gun was a piece of shit that didn't work. I do own many firearms including quite a few Smith and Wesson's.

The moral is I have no problem with the stock trigger, my problem was the gun went back FOUR TIMES for repair and THE MANUFACTURER couldn't fix their own product. They only made it worse and after 4 trips back I asked for a new gun. Smith and Wesson refused and wanted it back a 5th time. That "gun" was on a Fed Ex truck for more time then it was actually shot. "diamond in the rough"? According to APEX but hey they are trying to sell you something, correct?

TTAG has a few negative comments about this gun and APEX is trying to sell you something to reengineer the fire control group on this pistol. They also tell you that IF you replace the Striker Spring then you will get light primer strikes. No BOOM sometimes. That's not good for a Self Defense gun. Buy a Ruger Security-9 for about the same price and you wont have do a thing except for maybe adjust the sights.

Object all you want, my SD9 was absolute garbage but it was a reissue and a bit more expensive then the VE edition.

Putting money into this gun is like you cleaning the toilet in your picture. It's literally polishing a turd.

I bought the Apex kits for this gun ( all lighter springs and new trigger ) and the only thing that I would recommend is the Apex trigger, leave all other factory springs ( except the recoil spring ) in place. Also polish only all metal parts that make contact with plastic parts or other metal parts

Replace the recoil spring assembly with one all metal designed to work in a Glock 19 Gen 1,2 or 3 (do not use Glock 19 Gen 4 or 5 recoil assembly, it will not work), and select the 20 lbs spring, that will cost you around $20.00 search eBay and Galloway. Learn how to remove the gun internals and polish only all the metal parts that move and that have contact with other metal parts or plastic parts, that will remove all the gritty feeling off the trigger (do not sand or polish plastic parts, DO NOT GRIND OR SAND METAL PARTS).
Metal parts to polish:
1. The whole striker, including the the striker release surface (leave the firing pin tip alone).
2. The trigger bar on all sides where it will rub against plastic or metal.
3. The sear, polish it to a mirror shine, do not sand anything.
4. The firing ping safety plunger and the cavity where it sits.
Polish (ONLY) all those parts and you might be so happy that you might not need to buy the Apex spring or trigger kit.
When it comes time to put that trigger assembly back into the gun, you will need to make yourself a slave pin with a wooden stick (BBQ Bamboo Skewers for Shish Kabob) or something similar to cut a small section to hold the whole trigger assembly assembled to be able to put it into the gun, then take the trigger pin and insert it and push the stick out as you push the trigger pin into place, if you don’t use a slave pin, you’ll never be able to put that gun back together, just my two cents. Good luck and have fun.

Worst trigger of any gun I've ever fired. I know there is an Apex trigger option but I can only speak to the factory trigger which is absolutely horrible.

I have one I put an Apex trigger and stainless steel guide rod in, along with a different recoil spring. It's a good shooting pistol now. The investment in mods was minimal, maybe 50 bucks total.

Yes they have a standard 8 lbs trigger for safety, you can buy an upgraded trigger for around 30 bucks. These are clone from a clock design without the trigger and guide rod with a third of the price. I own three of them and the function great. I agree out of the box the trigger suck ass but with a cheap minor monification they are an awsome pistol on a budget. You can also get a stainless guide Rod for around 15 bucks.

All you need is Apex and this is a pretty good performer.

Just picked mine up today from my FFL. I couldn't be happier.

This is the first pistol I've ever bought that comes in a cardboard box. The VE stands for "value enhanced". Well I appreciate value and now wish more guns came in cardboard boxes.

I paid $231.99 shipped and am truly impressed by the fit and finish. I'll tell you this, better eat your wheaties before you go trying to pack 16rds in the magazines. I could only manage 14 and I admit that modestly. Maybe there's a break in but I struggled to get 14.

Maybe I got a good one but the trigger on mine is not nearly as bad as it's usually described. Really makes me wonder if the $60 Apex kit is worth the price as I've also read reviews stating the kit's benifits are negligible. Regardless, the factory trigger in mine isn't THAT bad.

Gonna try to shoot it tomorrow.

Most of the experts here don’t even own one. Mine rocks with the factory trigger.

Polish the trigger bar and the sear and it’ll be 10 times better
