Description
In 2003 the gunsmiths and engineers at Smith & Wesson wanted to deliver maximum power for serious handgun hunters. The power they sought required an entirely new frame, the massive “X-Frame™,” and was the basis for the new Model S&W500™, the most powerful production revolver in the world. This ushered in the era of the “big gun” and was only the beginning.

Lol, damn right that's a premium fidget spinner
Now this is my idea of a "FIDGET spinner"
If I were in the market for a ridiculously huge revolver, I'd pick the 460 over the 500 every day if the week.
A better idea is get a 44 mag Ruger and shoot Underwood ammo.
Sounds like haters gonna hate. I did a non technical test between the 686, 629 and my 500(I love my wheel guns). Taped about a foot worth of old encyclopedias together. 44 went through 2(3"), 357 went through 3.5" and the 500 blew a frickin 4" diameter whole out the back of all of them. If it breathes air, this gun will drop it dead in it's tracks.
This firearm is a masterpiece, had to have it. Dirty Harry would be proud!
I have an XVR 460 12 inch long . Don't be envious ! . I bought it because my state is shotgun only deer but allows handguns in revolver calibers up to 12inch barrels. Doesn't seem like it weighs 5lbs plus. The max range is 200 yards if you can aim it.
If you are using this for hunting, why would you want to carry around a 6lb pound handgun all day?. There are plenty of guns that are half the weight, and the ammo is half the price, that will accomplish the same thing.
This seems like it would be for guys who just want to say they have one.
for only $50 more you can buy S&W 460 which can shoot .45 LC. ,454 and the 460.
This is the gun I want him looking at after he kicks down my door.
I have a Ruger SB in a 10.5" in .44 mag. It dropped a deer dead right there and I like the gun. If I made more money I would have bought this Smith. The problem with the 10.5" barrel is that it turns into a rifle in your hands. You get a lot more powder burn than a shorter barrel and the added length of the barrel doesn't compensate for the recoil for the additional powder burn. It's pretty violent with heavy loads. For those of you joking about the compensator, you obviously haven't shot a long barreled handgun. If I decide to hunt with my SB again, I will have it ported.
Oh dear, after revisiting this posting a half year later (it's now 1/24/2016)' I realize that the comments about the "compensator" and the 8.5" length made by others were meant to be humorous. I'm a little slow. But I guess I don't think about penises all the time.
These are fun to shoot a couple of times. Convince your rich buddy how cool these are and hope they buy one and let you shoot it!
Lulz that it has "compensator" in the title...
I carry mine IWB, up front. When I do, they call me "quad-pod". When I don't, "tri-pod".
didn't it come with wheels? I've shot a bunch of them and my first thought is always that they are some damn heavy...
This is a fun fun fun gun. I would recommend the 163501. It comes with removable compensators (one for fmj and one for lead bullets). I have one and I love it. Cost of ammo is not for the faint of heart.
Thinking about this, a desert eagle in 50 or a 50 bmg serbu. Torn on what to do with some mad money.
The 44 mag. is easier on the body. Gets the job done.
Under the heading proper tool for the job, I would ask what the job was?
Under ordiary conditions, thie doesn't have the range to be effective at much of anything. There are a dozen weapons that can do a particular job better than a 50 Revolver, unless you scope it, and use it for hunting Bear or Elk, which very few folks do these days. It's more of a conversation piece than a useful gun.
The only guy I saw carrying one was a Giant of a Man selling at a Gun Show. He had it to show off to the customers, "conversation Piece". I sure wouldn't carry it for SD as it's too slow and you better hit the threat on the first shot, or you may not get a follow up.
