I love my gen 2 SIG556R. I really wish Sig continued to offer this platform. It's a true gem and something the AK should be in this era.

Not all German made things are reliable, specially this one.

For those of you saying you can't get yours to work properly - contact Sig Sauer and send your weapon back for service. I've found their support to be helpful and reasonable over the years and personally wouldn't stand for a weapon like this to be anything but 100% reliable with proper maintenance and care. It's also possible the gas needs to be dialed up as I'll mention later.

I personally own the P556XI (Pistol version of the 556XI) and find it to be 100% reliable so far with proper maintenance. The only time I've ever had a malfunction was because of fouling in the gas system which resulted in feed problems. Several hundred rounds and I never properly cleaned the gas system. Just dial it up to the dirty setting and it keeps chewing through steel case Wolf and TulAmmo like it were candy... I'm pretty sure it said something in the manual about this but it's been a while and I can't remember for sure. Definitely more complex than the traditional AK design.

There are pros and cons with this rifle for sure. Mostly, people are upset with Sig Sauer for not standing behind the platform. It was supposed to be a multi caliber platform with caliber exchange kits that never materialized. Sig abandoned the 556XI and has moved on to the MCX (another supposed caliber exchange kit platform).

For me, the P556XI has been mostly solid. The fit between the upper and lower has some play but never affected accuracy and was fixed by a wedge. The trigger, however, is not my favorite. It is somewhat adjustable but still not great. There's an aftermarket solution that I have not tried but seemed to get good reviews. The hand guard connects to the front receiver take down pin and I've seen some play there as well. The pistol version is a cannon and I somewhat regret not getting the rifle as I tend to find 16" or better is the right length for 7.62x39. Too much powder burn for a short barrel resulting in a flame thrower or sorts.

Other items to note - Mine came with flip up sights. While I tend to use them for backup purposes, I like the fact they were there. Lately Sig seems to be stripping the rifles and offering them at lower prices (or in some cases higher with the MPX and MCX) but not calling out the fact they're remove $200+ sights, rail sections, slings, etc. I find that to be poor thinking on Sig's part. I've spoke with them about it and suggested calling them out as Optic Ready or something to distinguish between the stripped versions and the original. I'm just a dork who buys their products so doubt they'll take responsibility on that one.

Finally, I've seen these go in the $1K or less range on Gunbroker recently. I think dealers are blowing out stock for a rifle that is no longer produced.

I have a few other ARAK types and can say this is the Cadillac of them all. It accepts all of my 7.62x39 AK / AKM magazines with no issues. Mine shipped with a Tapco which seem to run a little tight but I mostly use Magpul or Combloc. The CMMG and KS47 are DI but still decent guns. The M+M and Creative Arms are piston and perform decent as well.

At the end of the day I still see these guns as a novelty. You could buy an AR chambered in 7.62x39 and an AK type for the cost of this one gun. Proprietary parts are a big concern when something eventually wears out. Ultimately there's a lot of ways to look at it but aside from the cool factor there's nothing special about the 556XI. The lack of future platform support, proprietary parts, cost, potential reliability and so on keep this from being my favorite in the long run.

I really want to like these as love sig and love the round. But I've also seen and read a lot of negative reviews from sources I trust. I typically like to get some trigger time before writing off a gun but i couldn't talk myself into picking one of these up at $1,400. I did however pick up a used sig classic 556r gen 2 a couple weeks ago. I paid $600 and so far so good. It's light and ran well the only time I've taken it out. Accuracy seems ok so far but I will not know for sure until I get some
More rounds through it. I also love the look with Swiss handguard and folding stock. Classic look and feel. Also, the trigger is surprising nice. If your wanting a sig in 7.62x39 a 556r classic might be an option. I also picked up a used 556 which is same gun but in 556. Only had that one out one time as well but so far so good. I have a feeling the 556 classic's will actually go up in value as time goes on. Unlike AR's which continue to take a nose dive. This means they should hold value better than AR's which is good if you like to buy and sell like me... I still want a 553 commando or 551 per-ban but they are out of my budget right now:(. I would love to get some personal experience with the xi as love the concept. But until than or until they break $1K I can't justify picking one up. He other option is a MCX from buds right now for $1,199 which is a solid deal but no 7.62x39.

I hear nothing but bad reviews about this gun. I had 2 Sig handguns and have not anything good to say about it. Poor reliability and less that common sense design. I will never buy another weapon made by Sig.

Don't get me wrong I really like SIG they make some really bad ass stuff but for the price I can build or buy an AK or an AR that will out perform this hands down. That goes for the MCX too. I do own the MPX and that definetly is one of the best 9mm SBRs on the market. As far as 556 or 762 I just dot see the upside unless of course you just want something different and then in that case, go for it!

I'd like to get some trigger time behind this. I ended up going with an m10x instead of this. Seems like mixed feedback. I did just pick up a 566 classic in a trade which I'm super excited about. Haven't gotten it out yet but I've wanted one since before I could afford an AR. Something different. I think the MCX is the way to go in 7.62x39 but sig hasn't released the barrel or bolt yet. Or maybe they have but I haven't seen on. This could be an excellent gun but hard to tell unless you can actually put a couple hundred rounds down range. The Swiss made 551 and 552 commando are both on my list but it could be a while before I can spend $8K to pick one up an original 551;). Or a lot more for a 552 commando . I guess this is the next best thing.

Have the older version cant get a single mag to run flawlessly really want to love it but accuracy is average to good (not the best groups i have had). Read that they have worked out the kinks so will be sending in for warranty work but will believe it when i see it.
