Cabelas screwed me on their Black Friday Sale as well...I bought 3 guns and they cancelled them...Wal-Mart has the best ammo prices of anyone!!!

Other than bulk orders, I agree Walmart is unmatched, but for this particular item $50 is better than the $68 Wally World wants for it.

So I ordered the Federal 1,625 rounds 22LR Cabelas had for the Thanksgiving/Black Friday sale. I ordered Thursday. They continued to advertise the special all day the next day. Several days later, they cancel my order. I call, and they say that they oversold them and that their website inventory is not "real time" WTF? Then, they have the individual packs of 325 rds available, but won't make good by giving me these at the price I ordered them for. I buy a lot of ammo and a fair amount of guns, and I am officially done with these overpriced bastards.

This isn't a deal. The same ammo was for sale by Academy Sports in buckets of 350 with a $30 MiR/bucket and an additional $15/$75 spent if navigated to via retailmenot. That's 10 cents/round. Also, I pay this price for Rem UMC .40 S&W when it comes back in stock on Freedom Munitions. Not a deal for 9mm.

Cabella's will not ship ammo to Illinois. And I am not paying Crook County tax. I'll pass.

OK deal. Brownells will save you $10 on aguila or magtech 9mm

This is great plinking ammo but when Walmart carried it last year before they discontinued it, the last couple months it was going for $36.00 per 250! I would go to my local Academy Sports and have them price match plus 5%. They could not believe the price and would have to get the manager at times. I bought thousands of these at that price from Academy with the additional 5% off. I did this from Sept 2016-Dec 2016.

Had a $100 gift card I got off e bay for $80.. Even with having to pay tax, this was still around $8 per 50 because i got another 6 percent off with e b ates

Really not bad. I paid 28.5 cents/round.
$74.99 + $6 tax = $80.99
Used a gift card I bought online for 12% off. Always have plenty in my wallet.
Total was $71.27 / 250 rounds with in store pick up.
Deal is a bit better with free shipping which is offered occasionally.
Wish I could still pay 18 cents/rd but wish gas was also $1/gallon.

Still going for about $73+ tax at my local Wal-Mart.. and after taxes it comes to more than .32/rnd... Wal-Mart in the town over had 3boxes sitting on the shelf at the same price as well.

this comment is for all that think .30 cent round is high price it is .28 cent that's $13.99 box of 50. $69.99 box of 250 back in 1987remington umc was $9.99 box that is$ 4.00 difference not a bad mark up compaired to gas prices then and now .second with all this gun control and lead smelter plant closeing .you get what you can now .because you may be shooting plastic bullets next or nothing at all .once prices go up the donnot come down.your gun is useless with out ammo .

Cabelas raised all the remington ammo, went up $1.00 box of 50 .$2.00 box of 100 .these went up $5.00 box of 250=5- 50 round boxes 38 special went up $1.00 box i bought a lot of these back then for $13.99 box of 50 $27.99 box of 100 .$69.99 box of 250 all free shipping this was in 2013 .2014 prices went up .supply is up also these have been in stock for 2 weeks already have not bought any . i stocked up heavy back in november and december 2013 i thought the prices may go up after the lead smelter plant closed .looks like they did . the regular price on these 250 packs are $79.99 Gander Mountain is selling them for that .at least cabelas lower it a little $74.99 before they lower them to $69.99 just add this 3 weeks ago i ordered 2 boxes federal 115 grain 100 pack for $27.99 to add to my order for the free shipping the next day they raised the price to $31.99 up $4.00 over night .

Before Sandy, my job had me driving by Cabelas twice a week. I never bought ammo there. Why - their prices sucked. Post Sandy when ammo available was a good deal, Cabela's had ammo when others didn't. Now as things settle down, surprise - Cabela's prices suck again. Things really are getting back to normal.

well that may be ok for you but by me Walmart does not sell ammo,no stores here except local gun stores and their prices are higher than Cabelas.$18.00 box for 9mm 22 lr $45.00 to $50.00 brick of 22 lr .$10.00 box of mini mags ,Gander Mountain mini mags are $7.99 Cabelas& Gander Mountain 22 lr bulk packs Remington,Federal $24.99 look at Gander Mountain hand gun ammo ,it is higher than Cabelas. Midway Usa ammo prices are good but shipping is high. Sports Man Guide prices are a little better never have in stock .i have 22 lr back ordered from them 6 months all ready so Cabelas &Gander Mountain i buy from, 22 lr just from Gander Mountain. Cabelas i buy both 9mm nothing over $14.00 box 22lr nothing over .08 cents round [that is cci mini mags] you have to add your gasoline you use getting to the store and back .all the ammo went up after sandy.the lead smelter plant closed also..so you have to recycle or import lead .cut of one of the two .price will go higher. i did not take a chance waiting for ammo prices to come down ,they went up again.+ i bought when i see it may be would not be there if some kind of restrictions are placed.high sales tax ect . better to have ammo and not need it .then to need ammo and can't get it or pay threw the roof .

Prices are down now compared to 6 months ago. Period end of story. And Cabelas is not the best deal on most anything. But buy wherever works for you. I get better deals elsewhere.

Prices will go down. When all their ammo cages are over flowing with ammo they will drop the prices. My local wal-mart has an obscene amount of ammo on the shelves. It won't be long util they are back stocked. Had at least 10,000 rounds of Winchester 100 box 9mm this morning. (3-4-2014) 24.99 No box limit either..

My local cabelas has the most .223 & 5.56 on the shelves I've seen in about 3 years. Can only imagine how much they have in the back. All different brands too.

$0.30 / round 9mm as a "deal" is pissing me off.

Reality sucks.

All this ammo is over priced, but people keep buying it. I hated to pay $21 for 22's. Use to be $9 a brick.

If people keep paying $.30 per round why would they lower the price....
I bought enough at reasonable prices over the years to wait this out. And if $.30 becomes the norm I haven't lost anything.

I guess his actions and that of other liberals pushing gun control legislation after Sandy Hook had nothing to do with increased gun and ammo sales that resulted in the current ammo prices? What color is the sky in your world?

Just stating the obvious, the dollar value is down and demand is still there. Many things go up in price and never come back to prior "normal" prices. If you can't afford it you better go get yourself a wrist rocket so you can shoot rocks.

Agree with you here.

There are a few things to keep in mind here. Remington broke ground on a new ammo manufacturing facility back in August in Lonoke, AK. The expansion is reportedly going to cost $32 million and production isn't expected to begin until Q2 2014. Once it does open, will we see prices on Remington ammo come down at all? Or will raw material costs alone keep prices at these levels for the foreseeable future? Or will there be another legislative push that will make ammo of all calibers incredibly scarce if not entirely unaffordable by then? My crystal ball's in the shop so who knows. $0.28 a round maybe is high, but is much cheaper than OOS or taxed at 50% a round like some anti's were trying to push through recently.

So, taking into account the costs of the expansion itself (and this is just one manufacturer - others I believe are ramping up too), as well as the fact that there is still substantial demand making it unlikely for retailers to discount much if at all, I completely agree the prices will remain high for some time. The political climate hasn't done anything to slow down consumer demand, either. MAYBE things will stabilize, and we'll be able to buy whatever caliber ammo we want whenever we want at sale prices, but in the meantime, costs are going to remain high.

Edit: Edited for readability.

All of this increased demand is definitely increasing capacity. You noted the Freedom group’s expansion of their Arkansas (not ”AK” Alaska) facility which will increase capacity with the latest technology leading to increased throughput and lower manufacturing costs. High demand in the last year is going to drive others to increase capacity here and offshore. Increased capacity will eventually lead to lower prices. When the demand drops off, what do you think those factories are going to do with all of that new capacity? They want to keep those factories humming. Additionally the supply base has had more than enough time to catch-up with raw material demand.
Look at what’s happened to BCGs. Everybody and their brother tooled up to make BCGs. Now they’re even cheaper than before the insanity.

Current demand at this price is just increasing their profit margin.

Between material cost, inflation, and NEW shooters.....price isn't going down. I wish you were right, but you're not. It's like telling people to stop buying gas.

The $9-10 box of brass 9mm is gone. Remember when 9mm was $3 a box?? It was at some point. Think it's going back to that just because we want it to?

I will say I bought 1k of brass S&B 9mm recently @ SportsmansGuide for $12 per 50 delivered. That was as good as it's going to get IMO.

Hope your right though....

I see a lot people comparing ammo prices to gas prices and thats not an equal and fair comparison. People, nearly every single person in this country uses gas every day. School kids, commuters, lawn services, everyone uses gas. The demand for gas will NEVER decrease. The demend for ammo on the other hand WILL. The guy that got caught with his pants down and feels the need to buy every round he can find no matter the cost will eventually fill his stock or run out of money and then he won't be buying ammo again. The tens of thousands of people that were buying up guns and as a result wanted some ammo aren't buying ammo. A good friend of mine recently brought a XDm and he brought 2 boxes of ammo. He doesn't shoot often but for that one day that he brought some ammo he was a factor. The factors will eventually go down and the demand as well.

I remember when I brought my first gun circa 03-04? I paid $3.19 for a box of 50 rounds of Blazer (aluminum). Last December I brought 14 boxes of Blazer Brass at $10.49, right before the impending doom. Prices were already at $12 for some manufacturers at that time but look at .223. Right after Sandy Hook it was $.75 to a $1.00 a round and now you can found brass cased .223 for less than $.40

Hmmm.....
Just went down $.02 per round. If you were right it would still be $.40+ per round.

You mean to tell me the new plant is not in Alaska? *cough* Yes, Arkansas, I need to revisit my state abbreviations.

So what's the prognosis then, knowing it's highly unlikely raw material costs will decline in the foreseeable future? It generally costs more to build and run just about everything these days so even if the manufacturers scale up, are you predicting a decrease in ammo costs in the coming months compared to historical lows?

I understand the BCG analogy, btw, but do find ammo a little different. Ammo is an expendable commodity, whereas the run on BCG's should have and did hit a whole different supply-demand curve. I don't see the market getting over saturated with ammo to the point where they have to unload massive over production like some of the BCG manufacturers seemed to have experienced.

I live about 8 miles from the Federal Plant (Anoka, MN) and know people who work there. They are running 24/7 at full capacity, can't get it out the door fast enough. They are making a lot of money I'm sure, but there are also more costs for them. It adds up when you are paying each of your employees 20hrs a week at 1.5-2X's.

3 votes
0 votes

dude you're hallucinating if you think employee overtime makes a dent on production costs. They could pay every employee they have $100k bonuses and it wouldn't even be a drop in the bucket compared to the profits they've pulled in the last year. Between DHS orders and public demand, we're talking HISTORIC never before imagined levels of profit. Not only did ammo mostly double in price, but they've more than doubled production. The only reason there will be a "new normal" is because we've become too spineless to take a stand and keep our wallets in our pockets.. It's not because it costs any more to produce. Of course some shit dick armchair economist will argue that, but that's what it comes down to.. The only reason why anything costs what it does is because people agree to pay it. Their spines are as weak as their minds.

Clearly people disagree with me so perhaps I am wrong as to the reason this has been downvoted so much. I've never had any problems with it (also got decent reviews at Gander Mountain) and ~$12/50rounds is a good price considering the current ammo market situation. So I'm not sure why it got so many thumbs down if it's not price.
