I know nothing about compasses except that I should probably take one with me when I hike in the woods. Is this a decent choice for a newbie? Is there something to always look for in a good/decent compass?

Call me a spendthrift, but if I am in a situation that calls for me to actually use a sighting compass, I would rather spend the money and get a Camenga 3H.

While I am not referring to you specifically I notice a lot of "spendthrifts" don't buy anything for an emergency but have all the answers prior to one. You know the guy, talking about 1000 dollar all weather tires prior to a snow storm but he is running on three balds and a donut criticizing the guy with the 40 dollar snow chains. I personally would rather be the guy half prepared in the real world than zombie proof in his wet dreams.

Yes, the best gear is often worth top dollar but if you aren't daily navigating via grid maps this might be a good item in your car.

LOL. The phosphorescent version is actually a decent value https://www.amazon.com/Cammenga-Phosphorescent-Lensatic-Compass-27CS/dp/B00J094JKO/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_468_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=NMF6X1DX9X224WM960TT... vs the tritium 3H. And phosporescent paint never leaks and fades like tritium sometimes does. The ultimate tacticool intimidating Camenga Tritium SWAT Black model is only $90 https://www.amazon.com/Cammenga-Tritium-Lensatic-Compass-Black/dp/B00AG31JTC/ref=pd_day0_hl_468_5/134-6293401-9555222?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00AG31JTC&pd_rd_r=f522e11f-5222-11e9-8a77-f188713467c0&pd_rd_w=olwOG&pd_rd_wg=aBIhf&pf_rd_p=ad07871c-e646-4161-82c7-5ed0d4c85b07&pf_rd_r=Z0QC7HB5H4GG4TD0FDSA&psc=1&refRID=Z0QC7HB5H4GG4TD0FDSA... so you don't have to be a spendthrift to own Cammenga. With the SWAT Black model one knows exactly where to turn north towards the master bedroom, after precisely five paces east into the living room, before shooting the homeowners yapping puppy and flashbanging their infant in her crib.
Now that I'm a civilian I find 1:24k silva's to be lightweight and sufficient although they are fragile. With 1:24k maps I don't really need a sighting compass provided I'm not in a featureless flat terrain. 1:24k maps are such a luxury that I can terrain associate without much effort and rarely need a compass at all.
