This is an _awesome_ deal. These guns were considered a such a good deal at the $700~ price tag they were (and still kind of can be) hard to find.. they were selling out quick.
And for what it's worth, I'm going to sell my Remington R1 to finance an SR1911 purchase :).
TL;DR Buy it. If you can get it at this price? Buy it even harder.
ETA: Just saw the post below mine, don't have an impressive 1911 collection so I'm glad somebody who does was able to back me up :D
You'll have a hard time finding a better 1911 than the Ruger SR1911. My collection has Springfield, Para Ordnance, Sig, and Kimber along with my SR1911. It is a solid, very nice, stainless steel 1911 that shoots great and is easy to strip for cleaning. If you're new to the 1911 world I'd go for it especially if you're close to one of these stores for the $599 price.
Since you have both Sig and Ruger, how would you compare them?
The biggest difference IMO is the price. Both are solid shooters and well made 1911s. My SR1911 is just attractive in a simple, no frills, way that suits me. I won't bore you with the cliche "fit and finish" crap. Both feed any 230 gr ammo that I've put through them including ball and assorted duty loads. Why spend $800+ on a Sig when you can get the SR1911 for $600. I do like the "made in the USA" part of Ruger too. There are many YouTube reviews on both so I'd encourage checking them out as I am no expert but just a collector and shooter.
get a sig 1911, one of the best 1911 under $1k, on gunbroker sometime can be had for $750
Edited to add the disclaimer that I'm no expert either. I read a lot of reviews and articles by people who claim to be knowledgeable, but that is still not a replacement for first hand knowledge....
That is too subjective and dependent on budget for me to provide a good answer. I think there are values and non-values. Of all 1911's I decided the Ruger is the best value as it gives you an American made, all stainless gun with the important upgrades at by far the lowest price.
Other good values seem to be Springfield and Dan Wesson. Neither of those are American made so I ruled them out, but the Springfields are well made at reasonable prices and the Dan Wesson's are a good value compared to complete customs.
Overall, I think you need to be a true expert to appreciate any $2,500 1911 and I'm admittedly not that expert. The Ruger looks good, goes bang every time I pull the trigger and is more accurate than I can shoot.
I see this as a killer deal if you have one of these stores local. Add tax, but no transfer fee or shipping. In the end, you get a great 1911 at a price only moderately higher than a foreign made blued steel gun. I'd probably make the long drive to a store if I wasn't fortunate enough to already own one thanks to Grabagun!
Beautiful 1911, I would favor the full size model as more comfortable to shoot. All steel guns are kind of heavy for CCW though.
Fantastic price on a beauty of a 1911. I have the full-size SR1911 and was very happy when I bought it for $649.99. If you are into shooting 1911s you won't be sorry if you get up early to buy one. I plan to add the commander size SR1911 to my collection in the near future. They shoot like a dream and eat about any ammo you can find to put through them.
i know very little about 1911s. I have been wanting one for a long time, but havent driven myself to put in the research yet.
what more do you get for your money in a 1911 that is 2-3x as expensive as this? are the differences important, or negligible? Are 1911s standardized enough that you could, perhaps over time, upgrade this Ruger to be equal to or better than the premium 1911s for less cost (doing self smithing)?
