  • Its a cheap well made reliable compact gun from a company that has a great track record of taking care of customers. I got mine for $270 shortly after release. Its not a particularly interesting gun other than it is a good balance of features and price. A perfect inexpensive 'only one gun' choice. Mine sits on my bed stand with a laser light combo. I dont love it but its like a good dewalt drill... a reliable tool for the job.

  • How you feel about this gun reflects on how much you paid for it. if you got it for $300 or thereabouts - you're probably pretty happy. If you pay $400 for it - like I did at the height of panic buying you probably don't like the gun as much. As far as function - it's brilliant - super reliable - relatively easy trigger to manage. The size is a sweet spot for a concealed carry gun. But everything else about the gun is pretty mediocre. The sights it comes with are the "U - dot" ball in a cup type Glock sight - which nobody thinks is a good idea. The traction on the grip is pretty slippery - which is probably good for concealed carry because it won't chafe against your skin - but not great for shooting if your hands are sweaty or wet. The trigger is OK - it's a DAO type trigger and is pretty easy to manage. Magazines are a little too expensive for this gun to be a budget gun. For about the $400 price point the Security 9 will get the job done - but there are other options - like the Canik that will make you feel special and do just as good a job.

I’ve had my Ruger Security 9 for 3 years now and it runs perfect. NOTHING wrong with this. Shot steel case and brass. All kinds of JHP/FMJ. I’d go with this 100% for a budget friendly firearm

Back Order / Out of Stock as of 12/16/18. I've shot this gun and it is a capable performer. About the same dimensions of a Glock 19. Ate any and all ammo I used. Recoil is light, as is racking the slide, since it is hammer-fired. At $259.99, this gun is at a great price.

This is a great gun to buy if you wanna die in a defensive situation.

The only security I have owning this gun is knowing when it doesn't work I can throw it at my attacker.

It's really cute how Fudd69420 and EL Trollio have both been registered for EXACTLY the same amount of time, "2 weeks 1 day."

With those investigative skills I would have thought you'd be checking out Colt detective specials instead of this turd of a gun.

So as of 12/14/18 LX3 will work (checkout completely diff than it was on 12th w/no Ruger disclaimers) but w/out the $50 Brownells card, a higher base price and $30 worth of tax and handling fees bringing total checkout to ~$275 (plus another $10 for my FFL) I can do much better buying locally. Apparently Brownell's accepts or denies discounts on Ruger's depending upon how deep the discount. Shady IMO.

I just placed an order last night for this pistol and the discount code
worked just as described. What a great deal.

Dream on! "Discount Codes DO NOT WORK WITH RUGER FIREARMS" per Brownells website and order form. They make it very clear and explicit. Sucks as I'd have bought 2. Oh well, it's not like I need them. Just would have been too good a deal for a gun junkie to let pass. Shot it at the range....it's sweet and would have been REALLY sweet at that price. Oh and Brownells has been quick to fully implemented sales tax on ALL sales to ANY state regardless of whether they have physical presence there or not. I know the court ruled on the issue but believe it's under appeal and I have to wonder if that extra 8% would have ever made it to my states coffers. Internet sales taxes SUCK!

The coupon code DOES WORK if you go to the last page of the transaction (as previously stated by others).

    1 vote
    0 votes

BS! IT DOES NOT WORK! Not on the last page or any other with this item/code on 12/12/18. They don't even have a field to input code on the last page - Just a repeated very explicit "Discount Codes Do Not Work w/Ruger Firearms!" That's a fact Jack!

Can’t use any promo codes. Indicates “Ruger” does not allow promo codes and ask that the item be remove before a code can be add. Anyone know what the deal is?

    1 vote
    0 votes

You add the code on the last order review page but I just did it and only got the price down to $284 so I'm not sure this deal works as advertised

Yep, added the code on the review page of check out, $269.99 shipped, no sales tax (AZ)........

Was thinking it must be sales tax that's screwing me. Did that change recently? because I don't think I had sales tax added on my previous Brownells orders

If they're proving reliable, it would be cool to have a couple of these stashed in different places at the house. Keep the more expensive handguns in the safe.

I purchased this over a month ago for $285 with a $25 Brownell gift card. So, $260 overall. No ffl fee for me because local gun shop gave me free transfer if purchasing from them. I bought a stripped lower AR15 receiver to negate the fee. $260 was a price I could not pass up.

What I don't like about the Security 9 is that it does not have second strike capability. Everyone assures me that it will not misfire on the first strike, but the “what if” bothers me at some level.

Since the Security 9 is relatively new, holsters are nonexistent and ones that are being produced are so expensive. If you were to get a Glock 19 instead, you would save some money back right away with the over abundant, inexpensive holsters available. The magazines are another accessory that you would save some money. Glock 19 magazines are $13 to $18 all day long. Ruger Security 9 magazines are around $30. Luckily for me I only need the two that came with the pistol.

So you buy a Ruger, tell us you don't like its lack of 2nd strike capability, then try to persuade us to buy a Glock 19 which also lacks 2nd strike capacity and costs almost double? Doesn't make much sense unless you're a disciple of the church of Glock. Tell us, how does the Ruger shoot? Also good luck finding genuine Glock mags at $13-18, rarely do they go on sale below 20. Honestly $30+ per mag is pretty standard for non-Glock OEM brand semi-autos, so that's not much of a gripe.

Thanks for schooling me. I always assumed that Glocks had second strike capability. I don't own a Glock. Now I won't feel so bad about the Ruger Security 9 not having it if Glock does not. Everyone who seems knowledgeable about shooting says modern primers are so reliable that second strike capability is not really a needed nowadays. So, I probably don't need to concern myself about it.
I have not shot the Security 9 yet and won't until November on my next vacation time. I ordered 1,000 rounds sitting here waiting for that day. It has the potential to become my new everyday carry based on how I shoot with it.

DeSantis offers their Insider, Inside Heat and Sof-Tuck for it. Galco offers most of their models for it. Not sure how you have problems finding holsters.

Now M&P Shield with integral laser, THAT is a pain to find a good holster for. Only Galco had A model and it was backordered. CZ P-07 is even worse, it's not even listed by most holster makers.

Great gun for the money. Half the price of a G19 and the exact same form factor, capacity, and site profile. I would argue the trigger pull is better, but reset is much worse. You aren't using this in a competition shoot because the mechanics of how the hammer fired mechanism works will never allow this to have a truly great trigger. But just a stock home defense, ccw, or truck gun, this is the best bang for the buck with a full lifetime Ruger warranty.

I don’t have this double stack model but love using little carry pistols in local games. I don’t care about my score. It’s cheap training. I just get six mag nylon pouches to meet the stage round counts.

Calling a 15rd, 9mm polymer handgun that's nearly identical in size to a Glock 19, smaller in some areas, a "brick" is rather silly.

    0 votes
    0 votes

It’s the look of it that makes me say “brick”, not it’s size or capacity. It’s an ugly gun. Glocks aren’t much to look at either, but this brick makes Blocks look good. Looks like a lego gun or a toy to me. Ruger is making ugly polymer guns nowadays.

"Simply my opinion". Enough said. Not sure why you would want a gun that looks like an 'ass' (just like a hipoint). But to each his own. And I will refrain from calling you names. I graduated grade school over 25 years ago. Hope you do the same soon.

jtonneas-I shot one and loved it. Feels great in your hand. Looks great. Shoots great. Accurate right out of the box. 200 rounds without a flaw. Great quality just like my other Rugers. The only reason I won't buy one is that I already have too many 9mm pistols.
