The Brownells BRN-180® Lower Receiver is a forged lower receiver that pays homage to Eugene Stoner and Arthur Miller’s original AR-18 rifle designed in 1963 with all the right visual lines, yet brings in modern AR-15 lower receiver features for a product that gives you the best of both worlds.

While the original AR-18/AR-180 receiver was constructed from stamped steel, the BRN-180® Lower Receiver is built from 7075 aluminum forgings and is up to the standards of modern AR-15 lower receiver construction. Don’t worry though, we’ve made sure that these forged lower receivers have the cosmetic ‘weld’ marks of the stamped originals.

The BRN-180® lower receiver utilizes standard Mil-Spec AR-15 lower parts kits, and feed from USGI STANAG style magazines.

At the rear of the BRN-180® Lower Receiver you will find a 1913 picatinny rail section in place of the unnecessary traditional AR-15 buffer tube threads. This allows for out of the box stock or pistol brace solutions such as those for the Sig MCX or MPX that give you ability to take advantage of the BRN-180® Upper Receivers ‘fire while folded’ design.

Forged 7075 aluminum with anodized finish
Accepts standard Mil-Spec AR-15 lower receiver parts kits
1913 picatinny stock/brace mounting section
The Brownells BRN-180® line of products continues to offer the perfect blend of original styling and design, while incorporating modern firearm materials and advancements, and Brownells is proud to add the BRN-180® Lower Receiver as a continuation of this product line.

So it doesn't crap up inside and will operate without a tube sicking out of the back? And a 5 lug bolt? Nice!

Wonder why it is taking so long for Brownells to ship these. Been in pre-order status for several months. The stripped lower should be a lot more routine to manufacture than the BRN-180 upper, which logically needs a lot more engineering and testing before commercial sales. The upper has been for sale now for months.

I just place 2 on order. When I asked, they said they couldn't tell me, but on the invoice it said Apr 10. And yes a dedicated 22 LR upper will work. I have both the Ar180S and CMMGs dedicated 22LR upper.

These lowers are designed for the BRN-180 uppers, which fit a standard mil spec lower receiver. So that means that a mil spec upper will fit. Look at the Q&A on Brownells website, they say it will work with a 22lr setup and standard upper.

Hmmm...will a SCAR stock adapter fit on this?

Does anyone know of an ETA for these actually shipping?

Could this be used for a 22lr build?

I doubt you could do it with a .22 conversion bolt for an AR-15. Hit YouTube and search “AR-180” and watch a disassembly video.

Don't see why not, the standard 22lr conversion bolt doesn't use the buffer tube anyway AFAIK. [NB: I'm only passing familiar w/ AR-22 conversions; you might want to get corroboration on that.] OTOH, why would you want to overpay for a lower? You can get a stripped AR lower now for ~ 1/3 the price of this unit, and all standard accessories will be cheap & plentiful, vs. specialized stuff for this only available single-source...

This is a fair point, but - if it DOES work with a 22LR conversion kit - why wouldn't someone who wants a folding stock option do this over the Law Tactical folding stock adapter? This would be a less expensive option in the overall build.

That said, I don't know the 22LR conversion, either, so can't speak to that.

If someone wanted a piston-driven system with forged parts (unlike the original AR-18) and a fully folding stock, this is the lower to get.

The Solo300 upper should fit well with this type of lower.

The only advantage of the 180 is being able to put a folding stock on it and it still function. Had it been adopted it probably would have went through some changes. The M16 to M4 really isn't that much of a change. I wonder if the U.S. Military ever looked at the FN FNC. Had one of those and it was very nice.

I assume this is to be used with bufferless AR systems?

It’s an AR-180 lower receiver. It doesn’t use an AR-15 type buffer.

More like an AR-15 lower without the threads to accept a buffer tube and a Sig MCX stock interface.
You CAN run other bufferless AR-15 uppers on this in addition to the BRN-180 uppers (like a .22LR upper for example)
AR-180 lowers cannot fit bufferless AR-15 uppers

It's a brn180 lower which is an ar180 styled lower made specifically for the brn180 upper.

Everybody is googling.... what's an AR-180?

Basically a vastly better design than the AR15. Jim Sullivan and Eugene Stoner both agreed it was probably a much better design by Stoner, but the military had already invested too much into the -15 to actually consider the -18. Hint: look at the SCAR or Bren design

The SCAR uses a tappet system more similar to the M1 carbine.

I don't think so. Maybe in some elements, but the original is made from 80s lunch box tin. It was designed to be a 3rd world alternative to the ar15. I think the last commercial release had problems that brownelles solved. Personally I think the ar15 was way ahead of its time. If the ar didn't exist the ar18 looks like a progression towards the ar15. The ar18 is redundant in an ar or ak existing world. I think the wire stock t91 is a better rendering just my 2¢.
