how would one compare them quality wise to magpul sights? (which are kind of the gold standard for polymer flip ups)
So I got my FDE Polymer Diamondhead sights in and added some pictures for y’all to see. They arrived in 5 days in a plain, air bubble pack envelope. Yes, 15 dollars is expensive for an envelope from the East Coast to Illinois. Plus, it didn’t protect the blister pack during shipment, but that made it easier to open, and I hate blister packs… The sights appear unblemished.
One photo shows the sights on a FDE LWRC for shade comparison. Definitely a shade lighter, but I am not going for Better Tactical and Guns. These are book marked for a MPX in FDE from Santa, maybe it will match better.
The other photos show side by side comparisons of a set of Magpul polymers and the Diamondheads. The sights appear to be the same size and weight, with the Diamondheads being slightly longer.
In the stored position with the large aperture ready, my personal preference, I like the DH’s better. Only because the Magpul’s have the Small Aperture wing sticking up. Toggling between the Large and Small aperture I definitely prefer the DH’s. You simply have to flip the wing from front to back. The Magpul’s have a small tab you must use to peel out the wing to fold down the small aperture down. I cannot do this with any form of glove on. I know, I suck. Sorry.
To deploy the sights, the Magpul’s have a small wing on either side for a big win to the ambidextrous crowd. The DH’s have one large button on the left side. While I don’t remember having an issue with the smaller wings, the DH’s single large button is easy to find without looking and press. Call it a draw. Both sets snapped up quickly, and just push down to lock in the stored position.
On the bottom view, you can see the DH’s have a longer engagement section for the rail, almost 2x more than the Magpul’s. You can also see my biggest problem with this version of DH’s sights. They use something they call NiteBright instead of Tritium. NiteBright is a material that stores energy from ambient light and there releases it over time, like a child’s toy… Usually making it easier to see in dark environments. Over longer periods of time, no light will be emitted. In the stored position, it will be very difficult for these NiteBright segments to “charge” from ambient light. Tritium is much better, but far more expensive to initially purchase and replace.
Once Deployed, the sights can be adjusted in similar manners. The Magpul’s front sight adjusts like an A4 post sight and uses the same tool, usually supplied with Magpul’s front sight. It also has a small thumb wheel. The Magpul’s rear sight has a large thumb wheel that is easy to use. The DH’s rear sight is adjusted by a slotted screw driver, and the front uses a thumb wheel only. I think the Magpul’s win this round, but how often do you adjust your back up sights?
And the final picture I uploaded is of the sight picture for each set. This isn’t a real representation, but it gives you an idea. It seems easier and quicker for me to align the DH’s on my other rifles and gives me a greater confidence that I am holding a proper sight picture. but that is a personal opinion.
So, if you can get by the $15 shipping, I think these are a great deal while on sale. At their normal price $118, I would go with the Magpul’s for say a 15-22, and consider these for a light weight piece of equipment if you can afford them. I prefer the all metal Tritium versions to any mechanical sight I've used.
Unfortunately they are sold out as of 12-4-2018.
I have three different models of their metal versions and I think they are exceptional. Much easier to sight in than Peep and Post or Dovetail and Post. I should have the polymers in a few days, and I'll post an update.
Aside from the color, why are these so inexpensive?
I agree with WooHoo, just moving dead inventory. Maybe they have a new model coming out, or they bet large on FDE being the new black and lost. Regardless, I am glad they are. If I can post more images when they come in I will.
My guess is that, judging from the photo, they aren't selling a crap-ton due to obvious difference in color from your typical "flat dark earth" color. If you can live with different shades of tan this seems like s great deal.
They are shit and shipping is 15.00.
