They need to double the price and increase the width to match a basic metal ammo can.
These things are too small. Need like 2 to match the size of a regular can.

Apparently there are people who who think $4 plastic boxes should be burglar proof, waterproof, and atomic bomb proof. I for one do not expect this stay hermetically sealed while holding 10 pounds of ammo, suspended from the handle, submerged in a pool of water. Silly me.

It will do fine as a water resistant box but since the seal does not function as it should I would suggest against storing ammo in it. It allows air and moisture to enter in small amounts. It works fine for storing well packaged MREs or a compressed pillow, or gloves etc. Store nothing sensitive to small amounts of moisture in it and you should do fine. Think of it as a cheap tackle box.

You would be better off paying double for an MTM (also USA made) due to the higher quality QC and design.

Check your local Wal-mart. Some Wal-mart stores sell them on clearance. I just bought two for $1/each!

However, these do not actually seal closed. Yes, the lid has a rubber ring, but the lid does not close tightly enough to engage the rubber ring. This is due to a design flaw. So I would *not* use these for long term ammo storage.

Same problem with the harbor freight version, filled it up with water.. leaks like a sieve.

Frankly it's the first and last cheap plastic ammo box I buy.. im sticking with surplus stuff.

I will testify to that. The lid seems to warp being cheap this plastic. If you need a seal, get a metal box!

I'm seeing this as a $4.88 add on item, but like someone commented, Wal-Mart has these for $4.88 as well, or at least had them a few weeks ago. I bought the Bunker Hill one Harbor Freight sells for $4.99 occasionally. It's made in China. The Plano is US made, and a few cents less. I know which one I'll buy from now on. My 2 cents

If these are the Plano "field boxes" they are at my local Walmart for $4.88, I saw them today as I have about 20 of them. I keep my rifle ammo in steel ammo boxes in my Liberty Fatboy safe. But I store my handgun and shotgun ammo in these Plano Field boxes because they are cheap and stackable.

Today I bought the cheap StackOn 10 gun cabinet that was advertised here a few days ago at WalMart for $99.00. The gun standoffs are not installed and are just cheap foam with double edged tape anyways. Without the top shelf installed you can stack these 3 wide x 7 tall for 21 boxes total. Or with the top shelf installed you can stack them 3 wide by 6 tall for 18 boxes total.

That is what I did and the top shelf allows me to stack the 100 round CCI 22lr plastic boxes 10 wide by 6 tall for 60 boxes total. They stack on that shelf so perfectly it is as if the shelf was specifically designed to do so.

I have a reasonable amount of ammo because after Sandy Hook a few years ago, like many of us, I got caught short on ammo and because of the resulting price gouging that occurred I decided to never let that happen to me again.

I am not worried about long term storage in these plastic boxes as I shoot the older ammo and rotate the newer into storage. It is kept in my air condition house and the A/C removes most of the humidity. As far as any residual humidity it is taken care of by rechargeable/renewable dehumidifiers that I hang in my Liberty safe and the new StackOn cabinet. They cost about $30 each and have done a good job in my safe and I expect it will do fine in my Stackon cabinet.

I simply remove them from the safe about once every 4 to 6 weeks and plug them in for about 10 hours and they are good to go for another 4 to 6 weeks.

Just search Cabelas for Liberty Safe Mini Dehumidifier.

Should be called storage box. Ok for short term ammo storage range use but as others have tested they completely fail seals and all when it comes to real ammo storage. Plastic is porous so even if the seals worked they fail.

BUY REAL AMMO CANS FOR LONG TIME STORAGE!

They are very useful and affordable for everything except ammo storage.

OK here's the results from my testing these.
First I loaded 4 boxes with a 10 pound or 4.5 kg load. I placed each box in a pool upright water temperature was 84Ff or 28.9C, 2 at 4 feet or 1.2 meters 1 suspended from its handle, 1 on the bottom, and two at 8 feet or 2.4 meters 1 suspended from its handle, and 1 on the bottom. 1 at 8 foot suspended leaked right away. The other at 8 foot on the bottom leaked after a few minutes. The 2 at 4 feet both leaked right away. Maybe if the O-ring was a little larger it may have been water proof but I have metal cans for this purpose and don't feel like replacing the O-ring.
PRO
MADE IN THE USA
Cheap to store thing inside
Has locking capabilities.
Has metal clasp for closing
All plastic except for locking clasp so no need to worry about rust in the box, would be great to bury if they didn't leak
Box is water resistant not waterproof

CONS
Plastic lock loop can be defeated easily made into the box of same plastic materials
Handle on one of four keeps coming off under load of 10 pounds.
O-ring doesn't seal well
Looks like if you drop it with load the plastic would break, but I haven't tried this so I don't know for sure.
Box is not waterproof but is stated as water resistant

Made in the UUSA not like the cheap new steel cans made in China.
Would I buy more yes but I know their shortcomings. Good deal for the price to store things you can buy 2 for the price of a metal can just remember their shortcomings.
Disclaimer time, I DID NOT receive this product for a discounted price in exchange for my honest and unbiased review and am not associated with the manufacture.

UPDATE: I filled the boxes with water and laid them on their side, they all leaked. Seems like the O-ring is just for show as there doesn't seem to be any compression to it when closed. The water resistant comes from the over hang of the lid down the side. Still for the price not a bad water resistant box just make sure they stand in the up right position. I know humidity will enter the box I have as no silica can keep it dry with no seal.

I got four of these with an order of .45ACP ammo and I plan to buy a few to store things like tools and gun-cleaning items. I prefer my metal ammo cans for storing ammo, but I don't see why these wouldn't work just as well. For $4.88, you can't beat these for storing items in a garage, trunk of a car, or anywhere you need airtight storage.

Durable affordable small boxes. I'm not sure why people making other posts expected them to perform like metal or like a Pelican case, that's no flaw of the box. Full up with loose ammo is a big load for it, I wouldn't go hiking that way but I'm not afraid to carry it that way. I got them to store some loose ammo, parts, lube and what not; organizers that fit in cabinets, safe or other small spaces and love them for that. I ordered a bunch more, small size is great for junk in RV or whatever small organization in in sturdy stack-able box.

I bought 6 of these and I love them! They are perfect for storing 22lr ammo and boxes of primers for reloading. I wouldn't use them for anything other than air-tight storage for lightweight components as they are made of thin plastic, so storing pistol caliber rounds like 9mm or 45acp will make the walls of the box swell and break the rubber seal.
I bought these along with a gallon of silica gel and empty disposable tea bags (all on Amazon). Plopped a few tea bags filled with the gel into each box. Makes for excellent long term storage of anything moisture sensitive.

I ordered 3 of these for 4.09 and one of the MTM 50 cal boxes from Amazon and I must say the MTM box is better for storage. They are bigger and easier to stack in safe. Plus I don't have to carry as many boxes to range. I only paid 9 for the MTM and no shipping. No min purchase either....

Are you on your period?

Why are you so concerned with long-term storage of ammunition that you can store in a box and it's good for 50 years. Are you trying to horde ammunition in case when you're 90 and the zombies come you'll have boxes and boxes to lug the door to shoot them? Why don't you just buy ammunition that you need and buy some extra and go shoot it and save some for the wicked zombies. If you run out you could always borrow some more from other idiots that bouht airtight waterproof containers to horde their ammunition. Do you understand that ammunition is sealed in the boxes and unless you soak it in oil it'll work for decades? Get real! Where do you store your ammunition, in the swimming pool?

2 votes
7 votes

Symmit raises some really good points here. Now I'm picturing myself as a 90 yr old man... the zombies are coming! The ammo I've stored for decades soaked in oil is useless - that was a bad idea. Why didn't I just buy the ammunition that I needed plus some extra to save for the wicked zombies? If I run out I can always borrow from my idiot friends who have their ammo stored in $5 plastic containers.

Guys, be wise and follow my lead. I'm in for 50 and will be shipping them out to my closest friends.

$4.88 at walmart.

Serves its purpose other than my ammo storage.

Only a idiot would use these for long term ammo storage.

Not air tight and unable to lock and secure like steel and much smaller. I would NEVER use these for long term storage. Water resistant not proof. Even if you use plastic bags inside these plastic is porous.

These are ok for range ammo and temporary ammo storage or long term storage of non ammo items.

These are airtight, and waterproof. put a 5 lbs weight with in one, closed the latch, put a padlock on the little tab next to the latch and dropped it into a garbage can full of rainwater, week later, guess what, still dry as-a-bone on the inside.

So to hold ammo, lock it up, and keep just about anything else that needs to be away from the elements, these will work.

But as expected, I'm sure that the chairborne rangers, keyboard commandos, armchair guerrillas, and the call of duty tier one operators will not like these because they're not MIL SPEC GI ISSUE ammo boxes, just like the ones they see in their games or on pinterest.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no secret squirrel operator either, but I do have a few of the real steel boxes (5 as of right now), but at 15 to 20 each of the steel ones, vs 5$ each of these, I have way more (8) of the made in the USA Plano ones then the steel ones. All of them full of reloaded 223, 9mm, 357, 38 SPC, and a few full of 22lr.
No not hoarding, just like to have ammo on hand to shoot without having to go buy it or load it just before i head out to the range.
Will it last a lifetime, probably not, but i think a steel can will rust and fall apart long before that plastic ever starts to decompose/biodegrade or whatever it is that plastic does not do.

These are not heavy duty steel boxes, don't expect them to hold up to extremes. I use them for light duty storage of 22lr ammo and other light items like ammo boxes and such. Good for boxed rifle ammo too.

I whole heartedly agree! I bought 3 of these a few years ago (2 .50 and 1 .30) and they have cost me enough time and $ in the long run that I buy nothing but metal cans now, as it works out to be way cheaper for me. The first 1 got dropped on frozen ground, with an ecall in it and when it shattered it took the ecall with it, even tho it was lined with 1/2" blue dow, the 2nd was dropped, again, on frozen ground full of shotgun ammo and cost us part of the morning shoot, 3rd was dropped sunday, not on frozen ground, it was 50 degrees, with a electronic crow motion decoy in it that is going to the landfill tomorrow with the broken plastic box. they do have their purpose, but think hard on what you are going to use em for before you cheap out and get a plastic ammo can rather then the old stand by

3.99 at rural king. got some recently on sale for 2.99! I agreee with the prior review that mentions these are as good or better vs metal ammo cans. At least in the 30 cal size. 50 cal can hold to much weight and overload the hinge. In this size (30 cal) I've filled one with loose ammo and not had a problem. For the price I don't see how you'd go wrong.

Not bad but not the best either. I prefer steel but still use a few of these to store and organize 22lr and some 9mm. I find its best to use lighter calibers for these and they stay pretty sturdy that way. Walmart has em for a little cheaper fyi.

They are $4.69 at my local Gander mountain but to avoid a drive I guess it may be a deal. Plastic just does not cut it for me anyway. Just won't hold up to UV exposer and breaks too easy. Nice for light items but full of lead.... nope.

1 vote
0 votes

A low grade metal surplus ammo can will rust through before these UV stabilized plastic boxes will photodegrade. The plastic 50 sized cans will flex open (and rarely the handle will fail) under the full weight of loose packed ammo, but the 30 cal sized plastic cans (and smaller) are superior in every way to surplus metal cans. I've refurbished surplus metal GI cans since the 80s. Once the CARC paint (or its recent replacement) is compromised the metal rusts extremely fast. If I strip a metal ammo can and leave it unfinished overnight it will be covered with rust in the AM. I have Plano and other UV stabilized plastic cases that are over thirty years old and they are in much better shape and last longer with less maintenance than their metal counterparts.

I was able to order 16 for under $100, you simply keep adding 4 to your cart...
Not the best deal for ammo storage, but a good deal for storing components for reloading! Nothing worse in life than coming home to a $200 die coated in rust.
I've mulled over purchasing these at my LGS but they were too expensive and cheap feeling. For the 5.99 I don't think I will be missing my money if they don't work out. Just carry them from the base, not the handle.

Not a deal at $9. They are $4.95 at ruralking.com, but you have to pay for shipping. I ordered 8 and it came out to about $6 each.
