Can anyone explain why I should own one of these?.. or what to look for when purchasing one?

I don't know anything about HAM radios. What is their main purpose? Do they get military and police transmitions or what?

I'm getting ready to google up some info on them but anyone who uses them or is well versed in the their use feel free to chime in.

I can't be the only one who's curious about these things.

get a ham license and learn how to use it. its not hard. 8 year olds have passed the tests. encourage your entire family. when the phones go down and your within a couple miles you can still talk to eachother. if your part of a repeater group yu can talk even further

You need a federal license to operate these.

If you do not know their purpose, you do not need it.

No you don't. There is no legal requirement to be licensed whatsoever to own or operate these radios.

I read how the HAM radio hobby is dying off because of toads like yourself. I read more than a few articles and watched a couple videos describing how the majority of HAM operators are a bunch of whiny overweight and balding basement dwellers who get awl tewwatowial when it comes to their wadio time. Some of them were quite funny.

I bought one anyway. It can't get here fast enough. I can't wait to "play" on it. Trial and error thing. Not to be taken seriously, it's just a hobby/boredom thing for me. I can't wait to say cool radio phrases like:

Got chur ears on? Hello hello hello, is there anybody out there? Permission to buzz the tower? That's a negative Ghostrider. 10-4 Good Buddy. Why does it burn when I pee? Man down, Man down! Over and out.

You're obviously confusing HAM radio with CB radio.

The only thing that you can do with these without a license is listen. The 2m and 440 bands are for licensed operators only.

Anyone who transmits without a license is subject to a bunch of fines, and trust me, you will be caught. There was a guy who got busted a few weeks ago for keying up a repeater till it timed out. A few local hams found him in a little over 30 minutes.

Ham radio is not dying off, its just that people are too lazy to do the work to get the license.

Toads? look who is talking. You were wrong. Take your medicine and don't call names like a child.

sure these are a big deal and very useful in times of need. hell during a SHTF scenario, if you're still worried about what big brother is going to do instead of protecting your family...that's on you. the best thing to do is learn how to operate this radio, get licensed if you want...or don't and don't let big brother catch you. if you want to play around the billy bob the trucker then go get a CB...but i do recommend having a few HAMs for future situations...but seriously FCC?? now that's funny. i thought the FCC was somehow supposed to scare us all from operating these comms

sure. and people will know about repeater offsets and what channels are most useful? ham isnt hard. but there is allot to know before you can just pick one of these up and use it. it always makes laugh with people just assume these are plug and play.

this isnt cb. you cannot transmit but can recieve legally with these. ham is not a bunch of overweight basement crawlers. Ham is age ranged from 8 year olds to 100 year olds. the average age is up there in the 50's but everyone should know how to communicate on ham radio if for emergency only.

you do need a licence. getting a tech license is simple even an 8 year old can pass the tests. as long as you keep the license your good to go.

now with the band these broadcast in your looking at a couple miles or so comm range without repeater. get involved and be prepared,
