This is an excellent sight but you might have to try it to understand it. The same concept is utilized on some aftermarket front shotgun sights. This rear sight is shrouded in a way that the sight will only give you full illumination if you are centered behind it and therefore in target alignment with whatever the sight is focused on. I believe the first production pistol to utilize this type of sight is the Sig p365 SAS. In that case it is recessed into the rear, and with no raised sights the pistol is easy and comfy to pocket carry. I never realized how annoying that front sight snag can be until I started pocket carrying the original p365. They released the updated SAS version and after seeing how incredibly fast it is to pickup that sight, I can't imagining going without it. The primary benefit is a faster acquisition easy to pick up sight, that is also very good in low light. The secondary benefit is a non snag profile for concealed carry.

If this was my product, I would further develop it to fit into the recessed red dot mounts now becoming more mainstream from many manufacturers. Because you have to view it square from the rear, you couldnt recess the whole sight away without also notching the rear of slide (look at the photos of the p365 SAS and you'll see what I mean). The alternative allowing it to readily drop into red dot recesses would be to recess the majority of the sight body, including the light pipes, but allow a small center section in the rear to rise up above the slide contour. That would allow a much slimmer profile, that could readily drop into existing standardized mounts.

A friend of mine installed this sight on his Glock 17. We ran about 600 rounds through it and it is quite fast on the draw and more that accurate enough for what you would use a handgun for. From late afternoon till after dusk this sight was very bright and easy to aquire a sight picture. I thought that I would not like it. However, I was wrong. No, there is no front sight to deal with, it is or can be removed. Only the rear sight is replaced with this set-up.

No front sight. Google yankee marshall’s review. But the fact that he favors them should tell you something right there.
