Seems like a good price, there's still no way I'd order one sight unseen. Even the "good" ones aren't near as nice as the older JM models. Again. not near as as nice.

It's always something, whether the receiver tang doesn't fit into the stock flush, a sticky or binding action, unflush screws, something. They just don't make em like they used to.

I was able to price match this at cabelas and use my 20% off gift cards. Too bad they ended the extra 5% for vets since bass pro took over

Not familiar with lever guns much, would this be considered a good deal/price?

For this rifle, it's a pretty good deal. This $499 price is the lowest I've seen them recently, usually it's $50-$100 higher at most stores. The only less expensive new lever gun you'll likely see is the Marlin 336, which is a .30-30. That means it's more powerful, but the ammo is more expensive than this .44 Mag rifle. If you reload, reloading .44 rounds is a cheaper and simpler process than reloading .30-30 rounds.

Marlin had serious quality issues when they moved the factory that made these pistol-caliber rifles several years ago. If you have an Academy store near you, I would go in person to inspect the rifle before buying. Word is that they've solved the production problems, but you don't want to get an old one that's been on a warehouse shelf for a couple years that might have issues. Look for good fit-up where the wood meets the metal, check that the sights are straight, and that the finish on the rifle is smooth and consistent.

In short, if you get a good one, the Marlin 1894 is a nice rifle, and this is a pretty good price for it.

What Skunkie sed wrt "caveat emptor:" Academy is a reputable enough seller [altho' they won't sell this to someone behind the Granola Curtain, I'm pretty sure], but the way Remington/Freedom Group operates, I find it entirely likely that these deep-discount rifles were all cosmetically- or functionally-flawed ones that got sent back by individual shops who take the time to inspect their inventory before putting out for sale. The idea to go to Cab's & do the price-match thing plus the discount GC's frequently offered on flea-bay is an excellent one that I'd follow through with if the closest Cab's to me wasn't a 7 hour drive away in PHX... And you *still* need to be very careful w/ pre-purchase inspection of any Remlins, DAMHIK! >:-(
