The Ontario RAT Model 1 from Randall's Adventure Training is a folding EDC knife that can withstand hard use and abuse associated with tactical or survival tasks. For the money, there might not be a better knife on that market that can match the performance of the RAT Model 1. It features an ergonomic handle with smooth action and rock-solid lockup. The four-position pocket clip allows the user to customize their carry method to their liking. We absolutely love the off-set blade from the handle, which creates a unique look we rarely see in a knife and distinguishes it from all the rest. Whether you need to add a new knife to your EDC rotation (or you think it would make a great fit for a survivalist, serviceman or woman, or a true friend), rest assured you're making the right choice when you go with an Ontario RAT Model 1.

Ontario Knife Company has a long track record of making high quality knives. You get more than you pay for. How often can you say that these days?
AUS8 steel works very well in knives, and these guys do it right (proper temper). I would bet Ontario D2 steel is also done correctly. More than can be said of others on the market (ask me how I know).

This knife simply ticks all the boxes for a good ECD work knife. AUS 8 is a great stainless steel in this price range, easy to sharpen. Blade has a flat grind for great slicing but thick enough blade stock for hard use. Nice thumb jimping and a very comfortable handle with no sharp edges or hot spots. Solid lock up with no blade play or lock rock. Very smooth unassisted opening that flicks so well you don't need assisted opening, or to loosen the pivot so much that the blade is no longer centered. Four position pocket clip which has held up to a lot of abuse without bending out of shape or losing it's spring. An open back design makes it easy to clean gunk out of the handle. Nice overall build quality and I've never had a screw back out on my copy. The comfortable feel in hand, smooth action and large 3.5" blade are what keep this knife in my rotation. And if you only want to carry 3" of blade then go find a Rat II. It punches well above it's $25 cost, IMHO. It's also available in D2 semi-stainless tool steel for about $40 if you want more edge retention at the cost of less corrosion resistance and being a bit harder to sharpen. I've got knives in D2 and you just have to remember to not leave them wet or dirty, i.e., take care of your tools, which you should be a bit ashamed if you don't. This is the knife I recommend to knife noob friends who just want an inexpensive, solid EDC or work knife. Not the thinnest, lightest or most elegant knife you will every own, it's a work knife not a gentlemen's knife.

This is a nice deal. $40 at Cabela's. The knife wasn't sharp but a few swipes on a honing rod and it was razor sharp. It feels heavy and well built... and locks up tight.

This is the lowest price I've ever seen on a Rat. Great quality knives..I own a dozen of them.

They are a bit large for edc, but as a plumber I can agree with Crom, I beat this thing up on the regular. My other "beater" knife is a Delica 4, which is much lighter, not as tough and costs 3x as much.

Love my Rat I. Heck of a rugged work knife and a deal at $20.
