dam I was really hoping all these comments would be about the quality and not the combination possibilities

These are sold under various names. Mine is used daily and is still on the 1st set of batteries 18 months later. The directions on mine listed 10,000 possible combos but there are really only 256. Enough for me to keep the kids out.

There are 4 buttons, and you select a 4-digit code... I'm no rocket surgeon but that's more than 256 possible combos :o)

It's not rocket science. Think about it...each button doesn't represent 0-9......it's 1 number. The codes go from 1111-4444....ex 1111..1112...4444..."How many four digit numbers can you make from the digits 1,2,3,4?"

This would allow the same digit to be used more than once. For example 2314, 4432, and 1211 would be allowed. If this is the queston then think about constructing such a number. Write down the first digit. You have 4 choices, 1, 2, 3 or 4. Now write down the second digit. Again you have 4 choices 1, 2, 3 or 4. Thus for the 2 digit number you have constructed so far there are 4 4 = 16 choices.

Now write down the third digit. Again there ae 4 choices so the number of possible 3 digit numbers is 4 4 4. Finally there are 4 choices for the last digit so the number of possible 4 digit numbers is 4 4 4 = 256.

I bought the same safe from Rural King under their brand. They advertised 10,000 possible codes. I called their corp HQ and they finally agreed with my count. They said they would change the wording but never did.

The 10,000 possible codes may be from programming that allows you to push multiple buttons at once, like the Gunvault Microvault Pistol Safe, but is not available on this model.

If there are 10 digits possible (0-9) with each of the four buttons then 10,000 would be accurate {10x10x10x10) but if only 4 digits possible (1,2,3,4) for each button then 256 would be accurate. How many choices for each button - 4 or 10? If 4 = 256 combinations or 10 = 10,000 combos. Simple math.

Some you can do combinations of more than 4 numbers...I think up to 8 which really adds combinations.
