Description

The FN SCAR series of short-stroke, gas piston-operated rifles have the distinction of being the semi-auto version of the very rifles carried by USSOCOM. The SCAR 16S and 17S, chambered in 5.56x45mm and 7.62x51mm, respectively, feature cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined, MIL-SPEC, free-floating barrels. Fully ambidextrous, the controls adapt to any shooter in any shooting position. The polymer stock is telescoping, fully adjustable for length of pull and comb height, and folds to the side for storage. The receiver incorporates a MIL-STD 1913 optical rail. Three rails (at 3-, 6-, and 9-o'clock) mounted forward of the magazine well permit the mounting of accessory optics, lights, and lasers. Both models incorporate a gas regulator, enabling the shooter to adjust gas flow for optimal operation when firing with a suppressor. Apart from the awkward looking coolness of this rifle - who would justify this amount? I'll admit I bought one back when they were in the $2500 range and didn't shoot it much as I found it more of a novelty firearm than anything else. Accuracy is decent and it's lightweight in a plastic feeling way but seriously - $3K? I hadn't known about the backorder story and saw 41 comments on the post - of which now I realize is a debate about optics...

I kept my SCAR 16 but sold my 17 not even a year ago. I'll probably sell my 16 at some point as it's not my favorite gun by far so doesn't get much trigger time. It does look unique and functions fine but the price point these things are going for seems ridiculous. Definitely not a deal from what I can see.

I'm tired of gun.deals posting BS deals on their front page that aren't even in stock! This SCAR 17s has been backordered for WEEKS, yet when I "report" the post for the item being out of stock, they just ignore me and keep this GARBAGE listing on the front page! They used to be a good deals site, but the money is getting the best of them, and we see deals like this that aren't even available!

You noticed that as well? And 'good deal' listings turn out to be paid, overpriced listing. They do us no good.

Hahaha, aimpoint would make sense on all my guns if I dragged them all to work behind my car everyday, and left the red dot on 8 hours (everyday) for the next 17 years. Than, yes I would get the true value of an aimpoint over a Holosun. I could also sell my 4-runner and pick up a Humvee. Because the military uses them. Point is they just don’t make sense for me. The Humvee, because I don’t live in war zone. The aimpoint because I don’t need one on every rifle. That’s the only point I was making. I actually love aimpoints and still have one on my go to semi. I also love humvee’s but would rather spend my money on something that makes sense for my use case.

Fair enough. Think your missing my point.

Gotcha, define perform and last? Most of my holosuns have solor, same battery life, and have more options. Only thing I see as possible advantage is extreme durability. So if your taking it to Afghanistan for 2 years I will give you that. To each their own. I am currently buying and selling more guns than most people will ever own so being smart with my optics allows me to do more with my money. Everyone has a different situation.

More durable and able to withstand more environmental effects. The electronics, glass, and overall construction are also better.

Pretty straight forward. There is a reason the military does not use holosun, despite their cheaper price.

That solar panel will fail soon enough and you will never see 50,000 hours out of a battery.

Congrats on buying and selling more guns than most people will ever know.

Everyone on the internet is a millionaire and 6'5" tall.

Someone is getting a little annoyed at another man's RDS choices. I'm guessing you have zero experience with Holosun, yet you know they will fail. I have three units and found them to serve well, be durable, and have a better reticle than Aimpoint or EOtech. The glass is more than sufficient clarity and quality. I am into my third year on one with the original battery constantly on, lighting up the dot and the circle. I have other more expense optics, but like Rayat, have also learned that not everything the military chooses makes sense for everyone and everything.

And "I'm guessing" you are just here to defend your purchases as well...

Also funny that the 'murica crowd is screaming death to chicoms one day then buying their cheap RDS the next day to save a buck.

There are three signs someone feels frustrated when he realizes he has nothing useful to contribute to a discussion:
1. He throws an empty insult.
2. He changes the subject.
3. (huh. I can't remember the third right now, but I'm sure you'll oblige with an example to remind me...)

Seems he does that quite often.#3 He degrades the poster by saying he can't afford anything better. He's not the brightest bulb on the Xmas tree.

What do you prefer to run your Scar? Holosun does everything and more my aimpoint does. I don’t see point anymore in spending $700 on aimpoint. Now If the world ends I will use my T1. If I’m out on ranch with son I prefer Holosun. The reticle options are MUCH better. Especially for scar. Plus I’d rather spend the $500 I save on each RD on my firearm collection. I have 7 holosuns. At $500 saving on each, that bought my Scar. I do like my aimpoint just don’t see point in buying them anymore. One is enough for my use case.... There are so many great options right now for RD’s and optics in general no need to break bank. Just my 2 cents. I may have different opinion if I only had couple rifles but I like to run optics on everything so use a large variation of rd, optics, and magnifiers.... heck, I even run a couple TRS’s... They serve their purpose as well.. Lasty, Holosun is very legit. Been running them for over 2 years and never let me down.

I agree as well on keeping light. But adding the Kinetic mRex makes huge difference for much more comfortable shooting and grip. Plus it makes scar look a bit more updated. Only adds about 3 oz as the original rails come off. Than I added Acr/kenetic dev stock. Which cuts 4 ounches off he ugh boot. So my scar is actually lighter with upgraded stock and rail. Plus the KD stock is so much more comfortable and thin. Much easier to maneuver. I ended up having PMM cut barrel to 14.5 and pinned Deadair break. So that shaved off more weight. I added the miad scar grip, GG&G tilted CH, and Geiselle trigger and now it’s amazing. If I’m running close quarter/sub 200 yards I use hohsun circle dot 5 series which are my favorite red dots for money. For longer range I swap that out for viper pst gen 2 (2x10) but that adds some weight. So mainly run the red dot and have a Vortex 3x magnifier I can always throw on. I don’t get out over 300 or 400 yards much so high powered optics is not important for me. Plus a have a 6.5 creedmoor and that’s a lot more fun to shoot at long distances than 308.

I found one at 2898 at Kentucky gun Co a few months ago. Really happy with the purchase. Added a super scar trigger and a Trijicon MRO. To me its crazy that people bulk up these rifles with tactical junk hanging off at every possible attachment point....it defeats the purpose of a 8lb 308 battle rifle.

I have had this rifle for 5 years now, love it. I also agree about not hanging tons of weight on it. I also see people making all sorts of expensive tweaks on the aesthetics without any real functional value. However, a red dot sight is insufficient to take advantage of the range a good 308 offers. "Down range authority" is one of the main reasons to buy a 308 over a 556. And longer range accuracy is the main reason to upgrade to the Geissele Super SCAR trigger (I have one and love it). If you are content with fist size groups at 100 yards, a red dot is fine. If you want effectiveness over several hundred yards, most of your target will be hiding under that dot and you will have a hard time compensating for bullet drop. This rifle really calls for a magnified optic despite the extra weight, otherwise you leave a lot of capability on the table.

I bought mine at Cabela's using the discounted gift cards as I chose to go down the "be cheap" route - gotta be patient to piece together over $3k gift card and to wait for a 5% or 10% off promo. On the other hand, as long as it still back-orders, FNH can charge whatever price without any meaningful discount.

Yes the Scar 17s is an expensive platform and I hear lots of people argue that you should just build an ar 10. It that's what you want, do it. But it's not a Scar. There is a reason you can't find these in stock very man places and it's constantly back-ordered and that's because this platform is amazing. The recoil reduction you obtain with the .308 round is just plain amazing. After dropping in a Geisselle trigger, you'll not only never have to shower because you'll be constantly drenched in Scar haters and QQer's but, you will be feeling some trigger finger orgasms.

I have one. They are awesome. With that being said, I feel like there is an artificial shortage of them which is increasing the prices.

I got mine for $2400 in 2012. The prices should be coming down, not going up.

They raised their cost by about 800 in jan 2018. And nolonger offer LE models. So its base plateform thats 800 more.

That is insane. How can they justify that?

I've never shot a SCAR but I've handled a few. Neat looking and would be fun to shoot. I just don't know what you're gaining with the additional $$$ over an AR15. Maybe getting some rounds down range with one would change my mind.

1 vote

I'm not sure that comparing a 7.62 scar to an ar15 is a good starting point. This thing is expensive, but light and shoots like a 5.56 with a much bigger round. Find someone who didn't put too much shit on to weight it down and shoot it. It needs a geissele trigger at the minimum (more $$$) but man is it impressive.

Aaaaaaaaaannnnnnd it's backordered! These things are very hard to find, and once they come in stock, they go out of stock just as fast! I purchased mine locally for $2700 after tax, and THAT was a deal! I can't say they are worth every penny, but it sure does look SEXY as hell in my collection! ;)

great price. congrats. FN raised prices and cancelled every old backorder that people had at a lower price. Not sure what would it would take to make prices go back down again, and FN insiders don't see it happening.
