I have managed to pick up 1000 rounds twice at gunbroker for less than $600 shipped. I was also lucky the other day when an Academt opened in my town. The shelf had two cases, scored one for less than $500. The SS198 is available too, it can be bought on gunbroker as well. Expensive but available. Think I paid about $1.50 a round for five boxes a few months ago. At 2450fps and a 27gr projectile, it is a neat load. I am trying to find some information on reloading this round. I have been told it is difficult and there isn't any published load data from the main sources. If someone could figure out how to easily and safely reload this stuff I would surely be interested. I have collected about 1500 pieces of brass, just need the right info and dies....

$1.50/rd is expensive, is the SS198 worth almost $1/rd over the slower stuff?

Only if your trying to defeat high level body armor......I bought it just because I wanted to check it out. I probably won't ever buy any more unless I can get it much cheaper.

So one of those nice to have but not really needed thing since it's already under powered compared to standard rifle rounds? What's the point of FNH restricting sales of the SS198? Ballistic specs show it has slightly more energy than hot pistol ammo and less than 1/2 of 7.62 & more than 1/2 of 5.56 rifle ammo and 5.56 has been shown to shoot clean through 1/4 steel at 200 yrds. Hunting rifle rounds pack even more energy than those. Am I missing something or is the restriction more fear based?

sweet gun love it but that barrel is a little to long for me, plus 57 ammo kind of hard to find, I'll wait to see if others start making it too.

Which hand goes where? Any leftie ever fire this rifle? Where is the ejection port? Is it eyeball danger for a leftie? Does it have a built in deflector? Are the safety and other switches ambidextrous? Thanks...

Safety is located below the trigger and shells eject downward out of the bottom. Probably one of the most ambidextrous guns I've seen.
The question you should ask is... Where do I find cheap ammo for it...lol

It's more a question of finding ammo for it... not really a question of cheap ammo. When you do find it, it's usually surprisingly on par with 5.56/.223 per round cost. Ammo for this thing aren't plentiful, even without an ammo panic. Since it's a niche caliber, not much of the civilian legal rounds are made.

It's an interesting piece, if it ever gets around the $1000 mark, I might consider picking one up as a collector piece. It's not practical for anything else considering the caliber situation (reduced power for civilians and perpetual low availability) as 5.56/.223 is far more practical.

I paid $1000 for mine before the panic.

These used to be $1200 with the ten (10) magazines of 30 rounds.. If you do the math, mags are worth about $20-30 a piece, SO you got the gun for $900-1000...

This price is cheaper than the gougers out there... but it still an easy 30% (or $300) too high...
