Can someone explain to me how these are illegal? Is it because they can't be monitored by the gub'ment?

At a certain transmitting power two-way radios become illegal to use without a license. Many modern radios have several settings (low, medium, high, etc) and depending on the model one (or more) of these settings could be technically a crime to use without the proper permission.

Now ask yourself... Is the walkie-talkie police going to come to your house and test your broadcasting output after you call out to your old lady to bring you another beer while cutting the grass?

P.S. These can be monitored by anybody so don't expect your conversations to be private.

In the U. S., an FCC license for business or Ham radio is required to use these. I'm not sure if you could get away with using only FRS frequencies on low power. At high power, that would be a violation.

Look for MURS or FRS walkie talkies for unlicensed use in the US.

I have 6 of these. They are not that strong. You are lucky to get a distance of 1 mile out of these. They are only around 3 watts. ThThey work fine for trips when a few groups are in
