How expensive are we talking? It's my understanding the steel 223/308/etc doesn't wear like you think it wears. It does run dirtier than brass.

Wear is a common misconception on the internet, so I inferred that is what you are talking about. Not sure what issue you were implying if it was not excessive wear? What possible issues are you implying "with an expensive 308 rifle"? (I'm wanting to use this in a Smith M&P10 eventually, that's why I"m asking)

I've had FTE issues with steel cased ammo after shooting several rounds, resulting in having to use a cleaning rod and small hammer to remove. This was with more than one brand of steel cased. My rifle probably has tight tolerances.

To have an extractor break or

To have an extractor break or have excessive wear, the steel case of the ammo would have to have a hardness level equal to or greater then the extractor. That does not sound likely, does it!
